There have always been a lot of threads on AZ asking what are your skiing goals for the up coming season. While I think there’s something to be said about being happy with your life just the way it is, I think most people think goals are good thing.

I’ve read some on here over the years that are small personal goals like skiing more days, going to a new mountain, earning a gold medal in NASTAR, skiing a double black…etc.

I’ve read others that if achieved could be life changers, moving West, opening a ski shop, buying a house or condo in a ski town, building a house in one, changing careers to accommodate proximity to or allowing more skiing.

What this thread is about is how to we go about achieving these goals, both big, small and in between. Do we actively plan and make changes in our lives that are geared to making them happen or do we just kinda hope they’ll happen on their own over time.

There was a guy (can’t think of his name..dang) who posted for years on hear about his desire to retire and relocate to Salt Lake City. He use to lay out his plans in his posts which I found interesting to read. When he made the move I remember feeling really happy for him even though we never met.

I’ve pursued some ski related goals pretty aggressively; a couple have been realized one I’m still working on. Then there are others I just let slide and hope they’ll happen. If this thread goes ok maybe the descriptions will fit in later. I don’t want this post to get too long or be about me.

So do you get after it or sit back and wait and see?

I'm hoping that once my videoblog gets big, I can quit my job and move to Jackson Hole and be an unemployed skibum...but realisticly I just need to keep socking away several grand a year for the future..I can spend that money on steezy ski trips and use whatever is leftover to possibly retire a little younger...I'm happy skiing Blue mountain afterwork and most weekend mornings and taking some trips out west and up north. I'd like to ski in Europe and South America. The travel involved and language barriors have kept me from skiing those places but I can't put those trips off forever. Otherwise I want to continue to ski as fast as I can...I know I can get in a more aerodynamic tuck and just have alot of fun.

Now that I am 30..it's really about enjoying everyday as I have no idea how long I will live. I don't want to take anything in life to seriously except for skiing. One thing is for sure..if we get the winter in the Mid-Atlantic that Accuweather is calling for..I'll be calling in sick alot for PA Poe days!!!

every season my goal is the same, to be in better shape. At this stage in life I recognize that I will never be as strong of skier now as I was at 25 years old. Perhaps I could be if I skied 80-100 days a season again, but life dictates low 20's for me. So, fitness is the one thing I can control the most and directly influence how well I ski and my overall enjoyment.

I've been saying fitness is my goal on here for years. Last winter was the first time I 'got after it' a bit. I maintained an okay workout regime that fizzled out by December 1st. By the end of the season my legs were in terrible shape by having 1 day of skiing a week as my only exercise.

This year I took the biggest step possible towards fitness goals I could make. I'm at day 30 of quitting smoking. I have a similar workout regimen as last fall, but have incorporated some running into my routine, which I would never consider doing as a smoker. If I can remain a non-smoker and continue a fitness routine throughout the season, then I would say, "Yes, I'm getting after it"

Thats friggin AWESOME! Keep fighting the good fight. I used running as my crutch to quit smoking 15 years ago. Was a "fitness" life changer for me. Again kudos.

My goals this season:
1) Learn to ski bumps
2) Get better on the steeps

Pretty weak but hey I'm essentially just starting again. (cool thread)

Not a big goal guy but if I were to have goals for this season they would be:

Ski with my lovely wife more
Get to Whistler (have free place to stay just need to get out there)
Try and convince my wife to go to WF w/ me this year for the WC

Long term goal that I'm doing nothing about:

Want to retire in the Saranac Lake area----really need to seriously start looking at land or some kinda shack to buy.

I'd be in Wilmington, you'd be in SL, we'd practically be neighbors. We could hang out. :daffy::beer::snow::cool:

I'd say I'm a mix. Improving my ability I get after it - do drills for bumps, progress in the air. Expanding my horizons I'm a bit lax on. My two goals from last year in that category fell somewhat flat - tree skiing (which was about none until last year) and new places. I did maybe 10 tree runs all season (not counting Big Dipper,) and went to 1 sorta new place (Pico.)

I'd like to move out West eventually. My parents are going to move to North Carolina when they retire (3-4 years), so I'd like to move a year or two after that. I have a pretty good job with great benefits, though (plus a house), so it would be a tremendous leap of faith for me to just up and leave. I'd have to figure out a place, too. I'd like to live close (30 mins or so) to a ski area, so Denver and Seattle are out. I'd like to live some place with jobs, so most resort towns are out. Salt Lake City has a weird vibe with the Mormons, Reno is crappy, Canada has citizenship issues.

I'm thinking Truckee, California or Jackson, WY would be pretty good spots for me. I think I could finagle an Ecology or Geology Job in Yellowstone for the summer in Jackson and ski in the winter. In Truckee, I could find a local hydrology job, or (worse comes to worst) work in Sacramento (not really commuting distance, but who cares?). I'd also be okay with Bend, OR, Durango, CO, and Bozeman, MT. Like to get out west for at least a few seasons, though.

When I was there, it was weird.

You have to order food when you order a beer at a bar. Plus the beer is only 3.2% alcohol. I also don't get along well in Super Conservative states (I get angry at the way things are, then I get frustrated because there's nothing I can do to change things).

If I did live in Utah, though, I'd live in the Green Hills neighborhood of SLC, a.k.a. "Bro-burbia" (article in Skiing Magazine a couple of years ago was rad. Tons of pro skiers live in the neighborhood, 20 mins from Snowbird/Alta).
