My dad has some cousins in Dresden, I visited there about 10 years ago. At the time it was pretty amazing how beat up the roads / infrastructure still was even though the berlin wall had come down over a decade earlier.

Really cool city. They still had soviet propaganda posters and stuff up, there was a church that was in repair that was totally bombed out. Really fascinating .

Zugspitze in Garmisch is probably the closest glacier and it likely to still be open. Looks like around a 5-6 hr drive.
