Tight trees - fine, but try doing slalom spped at not-so-tight trees like Steamboat and see who's better.

Slalom speed in Steamboat trees...no way, those trees are waaaay to open to make that many turns...they're GS trees for sure. Not sure what you're getting at, but IMO tight eastern trees are harder to ski than wide open western trees...I'm not saying more fun, just saying harder...Steamboat's trees are cruise control city...my 66 yr old mother likes skiing trees out west...in NE she'd end up with a mouthfull of bark.

Most of the charging skiers I know are humble and quiet on the hill, they let their perfomance speak.

Exactly.

And HS must be thrilled that a thread about him has evolved into who produces better skiers, East or West...

I have been around the country skiing. Although the terrain is more intimidating to look at I don't think it is harder.

If you are truly a hard core skier and that is what you want to do with your life you are eventually going to move to a place that receives more snow. I would say that is why you find the crazy locals out west that are bad arse.

That being said someone mentioned the best skiers are usually quiet and dont open there mouth. I dont think that is isolated to the west coast.

Okey Doke. Either you're unfamiliar with the Twilight area (damn! - can't upload the pictures for some reason) or your Mother is Highway Star.

To give HS a little credit, is there a more polarizing figure in ski related forums these days that can generate a multi page thread as quick?? Except for maybe POWDR?? ;)

His posts can be fun to read and dissect, especially if he keeps them in regular font!

we have tight trees here (west), STEEP tight trees 1000 vert long, the kind that will make you pucker!

Please allow me the generalization...in most cases, on average, eastern trees are tighter...sure, you can ski off a trail out west and end up in the middle of a lodgepole stand that'll block out the sun, sure there are some very tight places out there...but I'd say ON AVERAGE, the trees in the east are tighter...more low branches...some plain old nasty puckerbrush crap. I know what you're talking about Lloyd...I was in Highlands bowl and DT opening week last year, its great, great terrain...some sweet, steep trees with lots of vert that are pretty tight in lots of spots...especially compared to the trees at Steamboat...hell DT had the best trees I skied all season, but the stuff here in the east tends to be tighter. don't get me wrong, I'd prefer to ski western trees...I think they're more fun...and more open...which makes them more fun...mix up the turn shape, get some speed going, open, tighter, open again, back to tight... as opposed to lots of eastern trees...jackrabbit like turns and batting low hanging branches out of the way every other turn.

No, not unfamilar...just also familiar with Preist Creek...even the maintained glades at most eastern resorts are twice as thick as PC and most of the Aspen stands out west...that's the kinda stuff my mother likes...and the kind of stuff we don't have much of here. Lets leave the comps of my mother to HS outta this okay.

DrJeff - This is the point - it has evolved into something useful. The content has nothing to do with the title anymore. Thankfully.

Then she'd like the new Dreamcatcher stuff at The Canyons. Pablum of tree skiing.

In my opinion, if you can ski the East Coast in the crappiest of varying conditions, you can ski out West just fine. I've been an east coaster my whole life, going out west is no more difficult, it is more enjoyable, if not easier.

I really, I really, I really remember when you drank my wine

Why can't we be friends
Why can't we be friends
Why can't we be friends
Why can't we be friends

I seen ya, I seen ya, I seen ya walkin' down in Chinatown
I called ya, I called ya, I called but you did not look around

I seen ya, I seen ya, I seen ya standing in it everytime

Why can't we be friends

The color, the color, the color of your skin don't matter to me
As long as, as long as, long as we can live in harmony
I kinda, I kinda, I kinda, like to be the president
And I could, and I could, and I could show you how your money's spent

Why can't we be friends

I think skiing out west v. skiing in the east are just different skill sets. I know that when I went west for the first time it took some getting used to the deeper softer snow. I wasn't bad, I just had to adjust. I also know that one morning when it was a little hardpacked and you had to edge to edge ski I was shredding the locals who just yesterday were ripping up terrain I wouldn't touch. Not that they were bad, they just didn't have the same experience I had.
Also - terrain wise..there are crazy exposed slopes out west with avy potential and total pucker inducing drops. However there are also hundreds of miles of soft powder trails with NO danger at all. Here on any given day falling on some dumb blue trail could knock you out as your head bounces off a patch of ice. Again one is not more dangerous than the other...it's just different.

oh and as for this highway star cat...it's a message board...who cares how much of a jerk he is...block him or ignore him...it's cyberspace.

Wow, its been a while since I heard anything insulted that eloquently.

I didn't really mean to insult it, it's just a very non-stressful way to get introduced to tree skiing - like what you said before - an almost GS course of permanent gates.

If you had to take a newbie, or someone unsure about treeskiing out for an intro tour, it would be a top pick. Take your charging buddies there? - they'd question your manhood.
