So, I'm not one that typically skis too much over the holidays, but due to the way things are working out this year, it looks like the all but Christmas is open for me to ski (24th, 31st, 1st). In general, what are crowds like/when do they show up and leave on those days? (or are there none?)

I'd say the 24th won't be busy and we've almost always found that much of the day on the 1st is also not busy. Folks stay out late on New Years Eve and lots of folks are skiing between the holidays so by the 1st there's some burn out. Most of the week between Christmas and New Years is pretty busy.

New Years day is great until about noon. After that you get a lot of people, mostly hung over or fatigued on the slopes. I hand up the poles after lunch because of that.

24th is generally great everywhere.

31st is a crap shoot, depending on the resort; too many variables to predict. If you pushed me, I'd say it's usually busy the whole day, though families tend to leave early.

What type of mountain are you thinking of hitting - major destination resort, feeder hill, etc? Each will have a different spin.

All depends on the crowds. 8) (Pretty much: Hunter, Sno Mtn, or Blue Mtn.)

Sounds like I should head to Sno then for the 31st and 1st, since liftlines don't exist there. I'll hit Hunter tomorrow instead.

and @massskier, I'd love to, it's on my list eventually....but that's not exactly a sane day trip from Central NJ.

My first day ever skiing was on Jan 1st. Morning isn't bad; like was mentioned, many are sleeping off the drink. Plan to leave by noonish. As for NYE, depends on the mountain. I knows ours is planning on special events that night, so it would likely be less crowded in the morning (though at night, skiing will be until midnight, so that's kind of cool). As for Christmas Eve... I hope the others are right. I'll probably be checking that out first-hand tomorrow.

Have fun!
