Greg makes all bumps  It's kind of like Santa Claus...he's an omnipresent being.

In all seriousness, they are made two ways that I have heard. One is that the mountain will groom a trail and have expert skiers repeatedly turn in the same tracks to make good lines. Second is that I have heard of a grooming implement that is used (which has ice cream scoop like things on it) to make bumps. I have not seen the latter...

I've been told of two ways that they do it at Camelback, PA. One is they push the snow into mounds and then have skiers run through it. I was told the bumps on Lower Cleopatra where made this way. The other way I heard (and this was for Rocket, a pretty sharp drop) was that they made a ton of snow then placed brushes in the snow where they wanted the bumps then had Instructors ski it all morning forming the moguls. This info was all second hand so I'm not sure thats exactly how it was done but the bumps were great this year (until they smashed them after the last rain and subsequent ice).

There is no mogul shaping implement in use. Moguls are built by cats pushing mounds of snow, which are in turn shaped by shovel (in the case of a mogul course), and skied into their nice proper shape:

(forgive the size)

Interesting

I would think the piles would be pushed in the opposite direction, going the long way down the hill

So I guess we'll never see the giant ice cream scoop come out will we? Maybe it runs only at night....

lol

the ice cream scoop has become some kind of skiing urban legend.

I've skied bumps that were made by a snowcat before they had been skied in or shoveled in at all. trust me, it sucks.

This method is correct, but the these bumps should be cut in half not the full width of the tractor. Poles are set the distance apart for the operator to make the cuts in the snow. This is going down hill. Pushing the piles will work but cutting them into the surface makes more of a dip in the track for moguls to bounce out of. Yes the bumps are skiied out. Shovel work is needed if snow is not the right condition. . I do have some paper work on this see if i can post it . Good question.

4aprice - anytime you go to Camelback and they have sustained bump lines, send me a private message! I somehow always miss them, it seems. Been there 4 times this year, and only once did they have bumps, on one of the lower mt. green runs near the base (maybe Lower Cleo, actually).

Natural used to be sweet in the old days. But these days, with all the different types of skis/boards they usually are a lot more irregular. Sometimes natural are still good though.
