Once again Hunter has been left out of the rankings for eastern ski resorts. I guess skiing mag does not feel they are worthy. Even Belleayre made the cut, for value, but they got recognized. With some of the best snow making on earth and some truly hard terrain i can't understand what the problem is. But if it keeps the crowds down, then so be it!

Being excluded from those lists is a good thing to me...

All that matters is the list in my head... And it's scarey.. :)

Well, we all know what Rodney Dangerfield (RIP) used to say:

"No Respect".

But skiing insiders whose opinions really matter understand...just look at the PSIA-E schedule for certification exams in NY. There are only 2 mountains in the state where the terrain and snow conditions justify holding Level III and above (Dev team, ETS, Examiner) exams. Those 2 mountains are Whiteface and Hunter.

Case closed.

But I have to wonder what gives. No other resort in the area comes close to the place. And now with the recent upscale condo build it should be on the map. Must have pissed off someone or people cannot get over it's old bad rep.

Yeah, I find that kind of weird . . .

First, that they haven't held a Level III test at Whiteface for the past few years, second, that they keep holding exams at Hunter. Dev Team exam, Level II and Level III exam there this year.

Now, don't get me wrong, Hunter is a quality mountain, but I think that the selection of Hunter for these tests have more to do with Geography than with how good the mountain is. For a lot of the PSIA-E skiers in the southern areas (NJ, PA, etc.), it's less of a pain to drive to Hunter than it is to Sugarbush, Stowe, or Sugarloaf.

I mean, really, is Hunter THAT much better than Gore (which has never had a Level II test)? How about Holimont, Elk, and Wintergreen, VA (Who all have Level II tests this year)?
You can't always judge the quality of the resort by the number of PSIA tests.

I think so...Gore is close to Hunter in terms of terrain quality, and I agree it's a quality place to ski at; I've been to all of the other ski areas you listed except Wintergreen and none of them can hold a candle to Hunter.

If I can't always judge the quality of a ski resort by PSIA tests, why is it easier to judge them by things such as nightlife, resort amenities, condos, and other activities? See, all I care about is the skiing...all that other stuff is utterly secondary to me.

I would like to see a survey ranking ski resorts only by the skiing and nothing else.

Is this based on the SKI reader voted crap? If so, who cares? Not all, but most SKI readers are more concerned with the skiing lifestyle than actually skiing. Most subscribers that voted probably can't even comfortably ski the terrain that makes Hunter stand out. I don't like SKI - any magazine that still tries to teach people how to carve in 5 easy steps by taking a few pictures of a good skier and talking readers thru it, can not be trusted.

Edit: oops, just noticed that it was Skiing mag, not Ski mag. I take it Skiing doesn't do reader polls?

I agree on all points. But realize that the magazines have to cater to the upscale clientele that makes their advertisers rich. That's where the emphasis on amenities and lifestyle comes from.

What I often forget is that I, indeed most of us here on AZ, care alot more about the skiing than anything else and that we are a very small minority.

Okay, some of you Hunterites are going to have to try to convert me this year. I haven't really come to grips with why some folks really like Hunter. Maybe it's because I don't know the mountain well enough. Maybe it's because I haven't been able to hit it with good snow. I'm not sure. Either way, the next time I have a ticket there, I'm gonna have to meet up with some of you for some turns. Because honestly, in the manner that i know the mountain, I'd rather be anywhere else.

Hey, ski_adk, JimG made you an offer you shouldn't refuse. Take him up on it, you won't be sorry.

Hunter?

Unless you follow him down Clairs on a nice icy day.

That's true. I had to pick my way down because there was blue ice between piles of snow. I also didn't follow him down K-27 because of the ice. I was leaving for UT in a week or so, and did not want to crash and hurt myself just to prove I could do it. I enjoy moguls, just not icy ones. When you are 60, you have a slower recovery rate then someone younger. Other than that, JimG took NYDREW and me for a total mountain tour. He really enjoys "his" mountain, and likes to share. BTW, I may not ever get to share another day with Jim at Hunter because I will likely be signing a contract of sale on my house here in the east by the middle of next week, and moving to UT by some time in November.

Good luck with the move!

T-Pete - you're moving to Utah?!

Back on topic - Hunter is a legit hill, no doubt. Sure, maybe it's ugly to look at and the trail layout is actually a bit strange, but the challenge is there. I would love to have Hunter as a home mountain to hone the skills. Sure, maybe it's not a destination ski area like the Northern NE or ADK hills, but in terms of terrain, it's more challenging than most anything south of Magic. Maybe the North Face at Snow is comparable, but even that is arguable.

I think the terrain layout is one of it's best features. They have a seperate section for beginners. On the front side from mid down lots of blues for intermediates, top and west side blacks.
