I probably never would have started skiing, but now that I am a skier, I definately would continue to ski.

most definitely.......since I could walk, when there was snow on the ground I would want to be outside finding a way to slide on it.

but I'm glad there are lifts, and cars, and boats, and bikes, and numerous other things motorized or gear assisted to manipulate gravity

I'd probably have a snowmobile to tow people up the mountain with.

My dad was "earning his turns" back in the 40's and 50's so he prob would have kept that up and got me going out there.

Would you still be a skiier?

Kind of an "out there" hypothetical. Do you mean if lift-serviced never existed? Or if it suddenly just disappeared? If the former, I would guess that many of us would not be skiers. After all, it takes a fair amount of time on the groomers to pick up basic skills. If the latter, yeah I would still ski. Good thing that's not likely to happen in my lifetime....

Interesting question. Living in the New York suburbs, I would have to say, not now. But growing up in Maine, I was always outdoors in the winter, playing on or in the snow on whatever was available, including my father's wooden skis with beartrap bindings. I was just barely aware at the time that lift-serviced skiing existed. If I had stayed in Maine, I'm sure I would have taken up cross-country skiing if there were no lifts.

Probably not. Being from NYC is a hike on its own getting to a mountain. I would probably have purchased a 5/4 wetsuit and became a year round surfer.

I would agree with Greg on this one. If it was a complete shut down from what it is today, I would be earning turns. If I had never learned, I probably wouldn't be a skiier, but would be active outside in the winter.

If I had gotten the right psychotherapy in my youth(upstate NY) to ween me away from hockey ...used to hike thru knee-deep snow..up over drops..etc...to get to these 20x30 frozen ponds just to try to put on skates and pass the friggin puck around... Things change!!

If they never existed, I probably never would have learned. Not because of lack of desire, but because I'm assuming that if there were no lifts, then there would be no places like Sundown and therefore it wouldn't be very accessible.

If lifts ceased to exist, however, I would find a way to ski anyway.

If all lifts went down tomorrow, I would still ski.

If lifts never existed, I think skiing would be a small component of my winter sporting. It would be like in my grandfather's era. He used to ice skate, play pond hockey, skate-sail, and also ski.

Oddly enough, if lifts never existed we probably wouldn't need the terms "cross country" or "backcountry". It would just be "skiing".
