Yup. The worst winter I can remember. Last year people said "it can't get any worse than this year", but it did.

I am fed up, I have assumed that there will be no worthwhile skiing in the North East at least until February - it will take a bunch of snow for resorts like Jay to fill in. I have focused my time and money on going out West. Got back from a week long Utah trip recently and just booked a flight to ski in Colorado mid January.

I will stop the airfare spending madness as soon as Jay/Stowe/Sugarbush open up at least some of their gladed runs.

Terrific you can take the time and make it to the snow.........I am also headed west in Feb for a few days with a firend that lives in Dillon....I have also shifted my planned move...I am trying now to convince the wife that we need ever BIGGER mtns...and CO is the place to be...shes house hunting online.. :) I guess thats something...No charm like NE areas we've talked about moving to, but man......all that skiing in close proximity..

I am now a snow refuge. Leaving (driving) for SLC on Wed and I'm not coming back...at least not for a long time. Good luck with the snowfall. I've lost my patience.

they haven't opened any glades - but, that being said, we have made turns in the trees this week, it isn't pretty, it isn't exactly safe, but for short wind filled sections it is distinctly powder, the tuesday goo that came out of the sky has hardened nicley, and if you stay to lower angle shots it is a lot like skiing now with the cold fluff that has fallen- we have been repairing skis weekly,

the good news is most open (no glade) trails are skiable now - and skiing with the headlamp is safe

for this week

good luck

I live in south Jersey so driving up to north VT is about the same time commitment as it is to just fly out west. I just don't see the point it spending 2 days to drive up to ski crap snow and trails. Like I said, once the advanced terrain and glades open up, I will make that commitment, but right now it makes more sense to pay another $150, fly out west and guarantee some good turns.

I am jealous that you were able to convince the wife to even look at the places out in CO. I am still working on the "lets move to VT, near the mountains, but still driving distance to our friends and family". If i can get that much out of her, I will be happy.

You are correct about the no charm aspect out west. Most resorts I have been to have either no ski town at all or a fake ski town with no character that was manufactured and assembled in the 1980s. One BIG exception to this is Silverton, CO. I would give my right arm to live there... tiny, one street western town that is exploading with history and character.

Well the original plan was to move to northern NH, but again...still fickle weather...the West is often has more "predictable" snowfall...

Her family is moving to Florida (in laws) my family no longer lives in Jersey with us. Her family would need to take a 3+ hr flight from FL to NJ anyway so what the diff if they fly 3+ to CO instead.??

The problem with NH is the job market which for me is basically non existant (im in Network admin). We could move within 40 min or so of Denver, pay the same type prices for homes that we would in NH and I could make close to waht I pull down here a year beacuse i'd be working in denver...wife might not even have to work...

Hopefully I can pull it off...if not NH is still a HUGE possibility.

Do it man. I love NH, and will probably always own property here, but when Im out of college Im definately moving out west to either Denver or Salt Lake to settle down (not before my pilgramage to spend a season in Jackson Hole). Salt Lake looks sweet. 45 minutes to the mountains, good job market. I can handle mormons if I get 500" of blower every year.

I just want consistent snowfall.....I lived in Boulder some years back so I like to CO vibe..I also have a few friends there....Denver job market looks good...Utah is always a possibility..I actually told my wife...she can pick ANY western state that has big mtns and lots of snow..I.E. Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, or CO...maybe New Mexico....

Hope she picks soon....I need to get out of here.

Ever since my first trip to salt lake about ten years ago I knew I would eventually settle there. The plan right now is to relocate when I finish my MBA a year from August and the old lady is on board too. It is much more than just the snow, it is the job market, the cleanliness of the city, the friendliness of the people, the infastructure improvements, tax structure, proximity of the moutains and incredible terrain. Also the fact that you can live dowtown in a major city without sacrificing recreation.

I can handle mormons if I get 500" of blower every year.

I never really understood this thought process. I am not a religous person but to me the importance of religion in the area is a plus not a negative. The importance of religion can be seen in many of the areas I mentioned above including: friendliness and cleanliness

One example: I was staying in sandy a couple weeks ago, the flight got in late so we walked into the 'texas roadhouse' 30 mins before close. I ended up sending the food back, the waiter and manager came out struck up a conversation and ended up talking to us for an hour. Turns out the waiter had just gotten back from a two year mission woking with the poor in Brazil. In the countless times I have eaten out in new england this has never happened, the food would have been thrown at me with a fake smile.

Another example: you see a hitchhiker in one of the canyons with skis/board they are always picked up in minutes. I tried to catch a hitch while hiking in maine last summer and we were treated like I was carrying a hatchet.

A couple anecdotes cant really convey the difference but I guess the point is they dont force you to go to church with them but the generally religous culture does have an overall positive effect.

Dude, I don't know. You're okay if you live in Salt Lake itself or Park City. Outside of those areas, the culture can be strangling. Of the non-Mormons I knew, both ex-Mormons and move-ins, most of them couldn't stop talking about how they wanted to get away.

Great skiing or not, I fled Utah for the Northeast in 2000. My parents moved us there in 1977 and most of my family are still there. They cannot stop talking about the church. Every minute of every day they are thinking about their religion. Every time I go back to visit I'm glad that I'm here and not there. Of course, the Mormons tracked me down here, too.

You might have better luck as someone who was never a Mormon than someone who was raised one, like me, but doesn't believe in their church.

For the skiing, though, Utah cannot be beat. You fly to Denver and you've still got to hoof it for the mountains. It's like flying into Boston in order to ski Killington and Sugarbush. You fly into Salt Lake, on the other hand, and a couple of hours later you're actually sitting on the lift. There are also fantastic summer sports opportunities and some of the most beautiful scenery on earth.

"hoof" it? I would hardly call around an hour to summit cty and a stones throw from resorts like Brekenridge, Copper, and Keystone....not to mention A-basin as well..a "hoof" seems pretty reasonable to me...I mean yeah...SLC to PC is only 45 min or so...but is the extra 15 min really that much longer??? ;-)

For the skiing, ill take either...but neither are that far from the goods....

Live for the pow pow....

I was curious about the actual distances so i plugged them into map quest:

SLC to Alta is 28 miles/45 minutes

Denver to Breck is 81 miles/91 minutes

Yeah I used Dillon from Denver as thats where I stay, but its only an additional 15 min from his place to Brek...maybe 20. Either way like I stated...its not all that much longer a trip...Utah snow is nice though....either way though....im not complaining about either place...
