In my mind, northern New England
Sugarloaf - favorite mountain and am willing to make a day trip out of it if necessary

Sugarbush - second favorite mountain and lots of places to explore

Cannon - on a good day, it's just excellent and an easy shot down I93; the brookside area is also a good place to introduce someone to the sport

Sunapee - a mountain close to home and, for me, this is where it all began; it's like coming home

MRG would have been fourth on the list but for the distance. I needed a mountain closer to Boston. Would have to settle for a Mad Card. Jay Peak would have been too but for the distance (it's enough that I have the Loaf on the card). Will get the $39 discounted ticket when going to Jay so that should be fine.

Great game!

I'd pick Okemo (closest to home), Sugarbush (just plain fun), Smuggs (worth a bit of a drive -- just wish they'd update the lifts!), and Snowmass (why not??).

i think Sugarbush ought to team up with Hunter Mtn and offer some sort of a reciprical pass. They could probably get more business by attracting some of the hunter crowd north east. I think they have similar reputations for being "hardcore" mountains. maybe offer some sort of discount on lodging.

For Hunter, well they would just sell more passes.

Windham or maybe BelleAyre ought to team up with Stratton/Okemo. These guys have similar aims which is to provide a good family experience. Again the goal would be to attract more NYers north.

In that case team up Plattekill and MRG.

I've actually come up with a few more ideas, set up regionally instead of what I want:

North VT Pass:

Stowe
Smuggs
Bolton
Burke

North VT Big Mountain Pass:

Jay
Sugarbush
MRG
Killington

South VT Groomer Resort Pass:

Okemo
Stratton
Bromley
Mt. Snow

Northeast "Beast Pass"

Berkshire East
Magic
MRG
Wildcat

Northern NH Pass

Wildcat
Bretton Woods
Attitash
Cannon

Southern NH Pass

Gunstock
Ragged
Sunapee
Bretton Woods

Fourdom Pass

Cranmore
Loon
Waterville
Cannon

Maine Pass

Sunday River
Sugarloaf
Saddleback
Shawnee (Guess I should call it the S Pass)

MA Pass

Jiminy
Beast
Wachusett
Butternut

Eastern MA Little Hill Pass

Ward
Nashoba
Blue Hill
Pine Ridge

Wow, never thought there were so many different options. I wish you could just take a $700 pass and throw on whatever 4 mountains you wanted.

And I changed my earlier idea:

Sugarbush
MRG
Killington
Smuggs

If I could buy a pass for $350 for those, I'd sure as hell also be able to afford the normal $189 Wawa pass.

To each their own for sure, but your statement on Kmart has me wondering where else you've skied in the East.

Wachusett: Not because I love it so much but travel time would make it attractive.

Sunapee: Our favorite of the places we've been that are within a 3 hour drive. And conditions at Sunappe will generally be as good or better than anywhere driveable (possible exception is Crotched).

Stowe: We have a timeshare there and have been spending a week there anyway. And it would encourage us to do some weekend trips.

Sugarbush: Haven't been but it's on my "would really like to try it" list. The seaonal pass would definately get us there.

Killington? That is in no way Northern Vermont...Central Vermont if not Southern!

Southern NH Pass

Gunstock
Ragged
Sunapee
Bretton Woods

Huh? BW as a Southern NH place? Bretton Woods, again, is in Northern New Hampshire...north of Cannon.

I agree with TB on Kmart being in central, not northern, VT. Also, MRG is a sick mountain but I wouldn't call it a big mountain. There is a ton of stuff there but when I think big mountain I think of the rest of that list and MRG just doesn't fit.

I was just finding SOME way to fit it in a category with Sugarbush. I was also trying to keep Stowe and Smuggs grouped as well. Otherwise, I would've switched Stowe and MRG. As for Killington, I think it's a lot more like the mountains to the north than to the south, so although it's off latitude wise, I think it's in a better place skiing-wise.

As for Bretton Woods, I thought it fit in with the other 3 in the list. I realize it's actually north of Cannon. I think I actually meant to put Loon there anyway.

Bretton Woods is 45 minutes north of N Conway, in fact I almost feel like its the farthest north of all the NH ski resorts. Best is how its in the northern NH group AND the southern. Cant work that way can it?

I'd rather group Stowe with the Bush any day of the week. It is by far a better mountain than Kmart and fits much better with the Bush IMO.

How about the "NELSAP" Pass, or the ski areas that we'd like to see revived:

Mittersill
Agamentacus (cool place!!!)
King Ridge
Swiftwater/Monteau

No question. I was shocked to see Stowe listed apart from the Bush and with several other "lesser" mountains. Stowe's a top mountain in the East - gotta be in the top 5 of any list worth perusing. Tons of natural snow, great terrain, steeped in eastern ski history and a great apres' scene. What else do you want?

And K-mart sucks. How many times do people need to be reminded? Somebody posted that it was the "best skiing in the East"??!!?? :puke: That's friggin' delusional! It sucks. Period. End of story, end of discussion. Have a nice day.

tell us how you really feel. :) Killington has a list of issues, not the least of which, in my opinion, is a derth of sustained vertical, but i wouldnt say it sucks. It has its positive attributes too. I think some people, however, get blinded by the sheer horizontal size of the place. It skis in small chunks. The biggest area for sustained pitch is the canyon which is about 1600 vert feet. Everything else is in the 800' to 1400' range. I know its max is listed at over 3000' but that is as misleading a statistic as exists in the ski industry. Killington is built sideways so to speak.

Just tryin' to stir up some fun. ;-) I love to beat on K-mart but, truth be told, I misspent alot of my youth at that place. I live North now so there's no reason to settle for the big K. When I was an Albany guy, it made more sense. Now, there's absolutely no reason to drive south, past far superior mountains, to get to K (unless those mountains aren't open - and K seems to be out of that game of late).

Indeed. Which is why I like Sugarloaf (and probably would like Whiteface) so much. True top-to-bottom vert. Even at Sugarbush, you can grab 2,400' at South and 2,600' at North. Perhaps Smuggs skis similarly?

My gripe about Killington and it sort of is related to the above is that it can be tough to get around. You can spend a lot of time traversing around. With that said, I'm sure if you ski there enough and know the area well, you can plan runs that result in a good ski experience. Back in college we loved Killington for the party scene (spent New Years '96 there - a blur) and the overall massiveness of the place is impressive.
