I hope whoever is in charge of the ropes gets a GM-of-Stowe-like epiphany and realizes that the people who will ski past a "Thin Cover" sign will not care about having to hop over a water bar or two on the way down! SMH
Totally agree. Complete BS. Uncles should be open, for example. In fact, it was open yesterday! But closed today for no reason whatsoever. OMT has water bars . . . we've been dealing with that for years before the latest management. Thin cover sign and go!. But not this year, Shootout another example. Still closed despite perfect cover. Bottom line . . . Vail has your money and doesn't give an f.
The GM is from out West, you'd think he'd be ok with being more willing to open trails

WTF. I went down uncles last run tues, we got an inch or so of snow overnight and they close? I went to Stratton today to get away!,
I ski the mtn 35-45 times a year and bike in the summer, only saw him once! Must be locked in office?

its true that they put up more ropes today - they didn't take down ropes. they also ran seasons lift... on a wednesday.

He skipped out on the Columbus Day addresses he usually gives and sent a statement to all the condo assoc instead. He isn't visible and hasn't been for over a year

Actually, from the Storm Skiing Podcast episode he did last Fall, he grew up in Jersey, and spent a bunch of time skiing with his family at Vernon Valley and multiple trips a year to Stowe, before going out West.
As for not seeing him on the mountain often, apparently he spends more time out on the hill in his "normal" ski attire, not his "employee uniform" to get a better feel for the customer experience.
Definitely different than Kelly Pawlak's style, as hers was definitely in a league of its own, and probably one of the main reason's why she is currently the head of the National Ski Areas Association

Food and beverage pricing, and no snow made yet on Ripcord. My only current gripes.
My personal feeling is that GM Brian is doing a good job, and there's a lot more that he's doing that the general public may not be aware of. He has a managerial style that seems to be more about building up his team's and then working to get them the tools and support from corporate that they need to succeed.

Hate to break it to many chiming in on the ropes situation, but the GM has very little to do with the ropes up/ropes down status of a trail. At the end of the day, patrol, and their assessment of the snow conditions on a trail and their ability to "reasonably" get a toboggan down a trail should they need to respond to someone on that trail, is what determines the rope status on a trail.This is the tool he needs to be buying...
Then secondary, there may be requests from say ski school or the competition programs, or sometimes snowmaking/grooming/lift ops/mountain ops in general to close a trail for various reasons.
The GM can push for something to be open, however the GM can't unilaterally open a trail.
Gotta call BS on that. If the GM wanted them to have a more liberal approach to opening trails then they would.

When you hear the chatter from patrol on our race radios we have, where the plan at the start of the day may be to open such and such a trail, and then AFTER patrol goes down that trail and radios in that the rope should be kept up because of very specific things they encountered on that trail, it is quite clear that the final call is from patrol and their assesment of the safety of the snow conditions on the trail and their ability to "reasonably" get a toboggan down that trail should they need to.
I hate to break it to the conspiracy theorists here, but it really is that simple.
And also for perspective, at my condo across 100 from the mountain, even in the flat areas that are relatively wind protected (I'd also add limited to sun exposure too, but that bright thing up in the sky has seemingly been absent the majority of the last almost 2 weeks!!
), the settled snowpack isn't even a foot deep. The snow/rain cycles haven't been too kind to the mountain, even if it appears from afar that thenatural snowpack, especially down low, is substantial. Just some objective observation
