My buddy was skiing Camelback (PA) on Saturday and followed a snowboarder up the side of a trail to hit a small jump. Patrol called him over and yelled at him for skiing "out of bounds." He then proceeded to take his name and address, put an "x" on his ticket and threatened to have him watch a safety video. Oh and by the way, my friend is 35 years old. Is this normal? Am I missing something here?

Not normal at all for ski areas in general, if that's something Camelback does often, I have no idea.

"Out of bounds"...We had a big laugh about it when he told me. I've never been there, so I don't have a measuring stick. What he described is something we both have done in front of Patrol in plenty of other places. The best was that the snowboarder was "pulled over" too. The rider was 16. :p My friend thought patrol just wanted to bullshit with him about his skis or something. He was completely shock when he started yelling at him.

Very normal..Camelback has both patrollers who are mainly there for first aid and also rangers who are there to enforce the skiers responsibility code with an Iron fist. I've personally had more run ins with Camelback ski patrollers than Blue mountain but in my life I've skied Blue 100 times more. I was once whistled at and warned for poling and skating on a flat leading to a PA black:smash:diamond to get extra speed...the ranger was like,"I better see some more slow and deliberate turns"...I was busted for skiing a closed trail with my buddy when there was like 18 inches of natural snow..Rangers spotted us through their binoculars and they were one step below tackling and shackling me. So me and my friend had our tickets clipped, had to watch a safety video and then we had to go to the ticket office with the patrollers where we were issued new tickets. Yes I've been pulled over at other areas for fast skiing on slow skiing trails and poaching but I was never treated so rudely as by the Camelback Rangers..they're rejected hall monitors..lol..I'd love to start a ranger program at Blue mountain to enforce the skiers responsility code and smartstyle and to take the pressure off the ski patrol. In exchange for a free season pass and line cutting privilages, I'd give up precious vert to make the slopes a safer place..

Perhaps alittle too much eggnog in the patrol shack..... I also have never heard of or seen someone get "pulled over" by a ski patroller. Maybe it's a flatlander thing

I was issued a ticket and put in the database at Blue mountain two years ago for fast skiing on a slow skiing trail..you'd be surprised it's easy to haul ass on a PA green circle...lol

But if I wasn't cranking nice arcs and was in a 20mph powerwedge turkey tuck, I would have never been stopped..so now when I see a ski patroller I just do the turkey tuck power wedge and I no longer get whistled at.

Camelback patrolers / rangers are notorius for this kind of thing. What cracks me up is that they took his name and address...now they're the police. In what VERY little time I've spent at Camelback I was pretty much afraid to do anything for fear of getting yelled at by a ranger.

I say we get a group together and have some fun with these folks :stirpot:

The video thing happened to me but before I went to watch the clip I stopped by the bar for a cold one. Every movie needs refreshments. As I was being yelled at a pair of A-10 wart hogs flew over. I was looking at them and the guy said hey pay attention. I guess I forgot class was in session. after the 30min circus I was sking again.

Give the patrollers and the courtesy patrols a break. They are doing their job at the mountains.

I think they are doing it to enforce the fact that it is YOUR personal responsibility to ski or board safely.

I have a friend who almost hit two teenage girl snowboarders a few years ago at another ski area. The girls ducked under a rope with several CLOSED and RACE TRAINING signs and they got on to a race training course. They were lying down on the slope to watching the runs. They were in the course and didn't know it. My friend didn't see them until it was almost too late. Who should be responsible for that one?

Has everyone heard about the lawsuit against the 7 year old?

If more people took personal responsibility for what they do or don't do on the slopes maybe the price of lift tickets wouldn't be sky rocketing at many of the resorts.

I'd like to see the ski patrol at all of the mountains do something about the skiers and boarders who sit and lay in the middle of the slopes. When I took lessons as a kid that was one of the things we were taught - go to the side of the slope and get out of the way if you are having a problem or have to stop.

If you want to sit down and talk to your friends do it in the lodge.

Do you have to stop if they whistle at you? I would bet most of us can out run them anyway. Just play oblivious to it, keep going up the lifts, I think it would be a fun time.

Big difference between trying to enforce the code and making up infractions and going on a power trip to someone in their 30's, don't you think? Respect gets respect.

If I'm skiing with my I-pod blasting, it's hard to hear the whistle. Plus with my Giro Fuse helmet, if I hit more than about 40mph, it starts to whistle..I've had entire high speed groomer runs at Stowe and Jackson Hole with a whistling helmet.

Me and Atomic Jeff from PASR had a high speed chase with Mark Miller, one of Blue mountain finest red coats two season ago. We got stopped for fast skiing on Paradise. As he was yelling at us..I said,"Blah Blah Blah"..and we both got into a tuck and bombed down the rest of the run..unfortunately there was a long liftline and no where to go..Mark Miller called in backup. Then were through his fannypack of lipstick and all his pens were frozen..we got written up and put in the database. Then last season we happened to ride the lift with Mark Miller..lol..this season there are way less patrollers on the slopes at Blue mountain..
