Montage - PA reopened as Sno Mountain! It can happen!

I'd love to see some of the little ski hills open up again.

Ones on the list I'd like to see reopen:

Big Vanilla @ Davos, NY
Cortina Valley, NY

Split Rock, PA

Craigmeur, NJ
Belle Mountain, NJ
Peapack, NJ
Snow Bowl, NJ

Highmount, NY (Belleayre is taking over some of the old slopes!)
Bearpen Mountain, NY (someone is actively working on clearing slopes on this one)
Silvermine, NY
Bear Mountain, NY (ski jump)

Gilbert's Hill, VT (site of THE first rope tow in the United States)

Montage was never closed, although they didn't operate part of the mountain (Long Haul Double, and Runaway and Fast Track trails) for the last couple years it was county owned.

the problem I have with the mom and pop ops is that they by definition are small. They are usually only good when the weather is good. when the weather is good, I really want to be at the bigger places.
M&P's are good for the beginners and close-to-homers.

when the weather is good....that usually is not everywhere

most of the MP's aren't in vincinity of the big boys and the weather can be good at the M&P's when it is not elsewhere.I'd prefer to travel to an M&P with good snow than some "bigger place" and ski on a bunch of ice pellets. If you can find the right place it can be rewarding

here is some MP that usually rivals any conditions I get elsewhere in the east and you aren't fighting anyone for tracks....you are only skiing 500 vert, but in untracked....from open till close...which I would rather do than get 1 or maybe 2 quality runs at some bigger place that is tracked out by 10am....

OK, I'm game. While the vid is enticing, without a name, it could be anywhere. Shew me der moni, man! Name some M&P's!

OK, now we're onto something. Certainly Snowridge is right in the middle of the Watertown/Lake Ontario snow belt. That area gets a significant, persistent pounding. As long as we're discussing snowbelts, the Lake Erie Snowbelt, immediately south of Buffalo is also quite awesome - Cocaigne, Peak n Peak, etc. Absolutely awesome powder days and nights. (I was born in NNY and interned in Buffalo, so I'm familiar). I would be at those areas (day or night) in a heartbeat if I still lived nearby.

Now Platekill, I'd expect to have variable conditions, no? I would not expect them to have good conditions when the mountains do not. They are not really in a snowbelt. Am I missing something here?

So these areas are 4 to 7 hours for me, who now lives in New England. It becomes more difficult for me to chose, for example, Middlebury, when Bush/MRG are so close. Or Tenny, instead of Cannon (NH). Or Pats instead of WV or Loon (NH), or Mt. Abram instead of Sunday River (ME)
That's kind of what I'm saying. Living in metro Boston, there are no real "Mom and Pops", or at least small areas that aren't deluged with "convenience" skiers that have it all tracked out in 45 minutes.

Got some/getting some lake effect at Greek Peak right now. Must have had 2-3 inches overnight and still coming down. Peak opens 12/1:daffy:

I'm not saying often, but have caught Plattekill with 2 feet when VT area had substantially less....and I would rather be at Pkill than that other place nearby

Plattekill usually gets more than any other Catskill resort. Open later in the season usually, but you can't beat it on a pow day.

Plattekill IS open. They are only open weekends - Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays unless there is a huge dump - then they have POWDER DAZE!!! I believe they are also open during the holiday weeks.

A rep from Plattekill was just at the New Jersey Ski Council kick off party in the Meadowlands on November 2nd selling discount cards, passes, etc.

It's NOT closed or lost!
