I have decided to go with season rentals for my 8 year old daughter this year. I am sick of getting her fitted everytime we get to the mountain. Anybody else going with season rentals?

I jumped up and bought my daughter a pair of skis at the end of her first season of rentals/lessons. The "pride in ownership" thing paid dividends.

I agree that getting fitted every time you hit the hill takes a toll.

I bought her Junior Atomics at the end of the the season. she skied them for 3 or four seasons (slow progress). I finally upgraded her skis to RX4's last pre-season...and upgraded her boots this preseason. She's ready to rock.

What are you guys paying for "season rentals"?

Gonna either go season rentals or used for my soon-to-be four year old. No way in hell I'm going to rent each outing. She's sporting a season pass too so it's straight to the slopes from the car. I need to minimize any sort of lag time with a 4 year old. I may only get an hour or two out with her at a stint so efficiency is key!

I don't have kids, but think the season rental thing is a great idea.

It isn't just having to get them set up, but hitting the line at the rental shop, just when everyone else is. :flame:

And if you buy them their own stuff, they may frow out of it in one season. Or worse, you might try to get them to use stuff that doesn't really fit, "just one more season", making it a bad experience for everyone.

First time I heard about season rentals for kids I thought it was great. And I don't know of a shop that doesn't do it. :)

Season rentals for a skier and a snow boarder for our family. We rented a few weeks ago at a shop near Sugarbush that had great gear selection and really took time fitting our kids properly. $119 for the skis/boots/poles and $189 for the snowboard/boots/bindings.

I did season rentals for all three of my kids until they each hit around age 13. Find rentals that let you "upgrade" boot sizes whenever their feet grow.

brand new atomic skiis, boots, bindings, poles were $120 for season until april 30th

brand new burton board, boots and bindings were $160 for season

at ages 11 and 13, they can grow out of boots mid season! No better deal than to do seasonal rentals, I use to buy new every year for a few years then I smartened up!!

we rent boots for our 4yr old (she stared skiing at 2.5) and we bought skis, got 2 years out of them, now will trade them in for a newer/longer pair as she grew....it was cheaper to buy than rent for 2yrs

Today we went up to Mohawk Mountain to get my daughter season rentals. Used equipment is only $99. We ended up with a decent pair of rear-entry Rossignol boots and some really nice Atomic skis for her. Size? 70 cm! This afternoon Abby and I put on our boots and watched a little bit of Snow Gods! :)

Mohawk also has a really good "Parent and Tot" lesson deal. $70 for a 90 minute lesson and two half day lift tickets. That's a helluva deal. She's already signed up for the "Puffins" ski camp at Sundown during Christmas week so I plan to hit Mohawk once or twice prior to that. I also plan to bring her up to the "big" mountain later in the season - Ski Buttnernut!

For anyone in CT there is a great deal on rentals for kids in Southbury. The place is called leisure time and the deal is you purchase a brand new package (skis, bindings, boots, and poles) for 380.00 (or thereabouts) and every year after that you trade everything in for no additional cost. The program ends when your kid reaches, if I remember correctly, 110 lbs.
Whatever you get your last year you keep. The stuff you get in subsequent years can be new or used. This is the second year for my son, 7 yrs old, and he got used skis and new boots (kept the same poles). I figure I should get 6 years out of this which means it'll end up costing 63 per year!

Dave...what's the age difference between your two girls? 3 or 4 years would be my guess. Have you considered a pair of skis for the oldest now could be "handed down" to the youngest? The only caveat is the changing technology in skis and binding issues over the years. None the less, it's something to consider for next year. Maybe you can buy the skis at the end of the season on the cheap.

I guess I'm in the minority here. We've always done the ski swap thing, and typically are able to buy boots and skis (with bindings) for under $50 per kid. New? No, but good equipment that serves them well. The next year we sell the old equipment at the swap, and pick up new stuff. We normally pick up one pair of boots that fits perfectly, and one pair in the next size up, so they're good to go if their feet grow. We can always sell them the following year if they wind up growing through the upper size in July.

ETA: I guess I'm not in such a minority. I didn't notice that there was a second page of posts with more buyers.
