Its makes me smile, esp. if it is worn with confidence and the skier can back it up.

One of my pet peeves in ski clothing is pants, esp. for guys. They are ALL black!! If you are lucky, you might get a gray or a brown. You have to hunt like hell to find a basic red or blue. Anything more interesting is a rare find. Now, place that against he backdrop of the jackets, which, even for guys, presents many options, in all sorts of patterns and colors, from bland to eye-searing...It doesn't make sense to me.

The ladies, and to a certain extent, the park guys, have it better, but only to a certain degree.

I wear red pants, I have a green and beige jacket that I love, but that makes me look a touch like a christmas tree.
Gah, I know it. I'm trying to go a little flashier with my pants but not park rat flashy. A slightly subdued orange would work great, but all I've seen is surface of the sun bright orange. That or a red/black plaid, but those are all snowboarder pants.

Red or blue would be acceptable too if it weren't for them not going well with a solid green jacket. Blue just doesn't work, red has the aforementioned Christmas tree effect.

I don't feel right unless I am rocking my Sessions hounds-tooth ski pants. Ask Greg about them, they are rad. Honestly the hounds-tooth pattern (gray and black) is barely noticeable.

I have a pair of Sessions pants with that pattern/color. Best pants ever. 20k / 20k, 4 vents. I matched them with a Sessions houndstooth jacket (different color) that I'm also really fond of.

I'm wearing the same North Face jacket I've worn for years. By something good, that's a primary color and you'll get years of use out of it. I still have some Burton Biolight (black) pants that I could wear if push came to shove.

Some of the outfits are a bit loud now...but style is style. Me not "getting" is just proof that I'm getting older. I still don't "get" the oversized basketball jerseys though.

I like seeing attitudeon the hill. Skiing is self expression. Personally, I think it's dumb to go out and buy new gear all the time to be in fashion. All of us should use 100 percent of the life out of a garment or piece of equipment and not be a slave to the perception of obsolesence(sp) based on graphics or gimiks like I pod controls on your sleeve or speakers in your hood, but when it's time to buy, if a kid wants a plaid one piece, or canary yellow pants....go for it...be aware though, if you poach, there's no blending in with the crowd at the lift line. BITD, alot of regulars went all black. Still do at Stowe. For the simple reason of all looking alike from a distance when poaching. Plausible denial when patrol come up to you in lift line after skiing a closed trail and tried to bust you....and all 3 of you partners were also in all black. One day Sam bought red pants.....he got busted skiing Chin Clip. John was in all black....he didn't. My personal choice is to be a bottom feeder when it comes to gear. So many shells, pants, gloves ect. don't sell because of color, or some other dumb shit that doesn't mean anything from a functionality standpoint. Steepandcheep and the like get you prodeal basically with 50-80 percent off leftovers, samples and what not. So what if my shell is hunter orange and beige....it's a LoweAlpine, brand new for 100 bucks....so what if my pants don't have outside pockets....they are also Lowe Alpine for 75 bucks...new and significantly reduced retail price is my favorite fashion statement...

I agree. I don't think anyone should ever buy anything skiing related solely because they like the way it looks better than last year's equipment. That's a waste of resources in more ways than one. I tend to use things down to 70-85% of their life and then shelf them for periodic use thereafter, as hand me downs. I've introduced a lot of people to the sport; I have 2 friends using former ski pants of mine, 1 using old goggles, my brother using my old jacket, 1 using my old skis, and another using my old boots (and they SMELL). I've also brokered the re-use of my gf's old equipment. One of the biggest barriers to entry for the average person is the cost of new gear. Newbs don't know about backcountry.com or tramdock, etc..and they don't know that if you hang around the mountains in April, May or Sept. and October, you can find a lot of great deals on quality equipment.

I basically still either have and use or had and gave to a newb every piece of ski clothing and most equip. i've ever purchased, since 1994 when I started getting into gear and caring about that sort of stuff. One thing you can say about the big brand name ski outfitting companies is they make damn good quality stuff; it lasts a long time.

If you guys want something flashier, these are on SAC right now:

Only $50 and they can be YOURS!

That's too far the other way, but in other news they finally have the pants up in white I've been waiting on! Too bad I got impatient and ordered the Oakley Enlists instead (in white as well).

Based on my current clothing, I've opted for a ninja look: Black hat, goggles, facemask, layers, and pants. Black jacket with a bit of grey and dark red. Then my boots and skis ruin it though, they're both bright red.

I don't have much ski fashion sense, except that if given the option, I opt for plain.....but I care about function way more than looks (except maybe the 80s neon, if looking in a mirror blinds me, I draw the line there).

I hear ya. I hate black ski pants. Spent the last few seasons in light grey, but they're getting kinda ratty. Upgraded to tan cargos, but unfortunately, they are too small for me. Scored a pair of cool TNF cargos though in a subtle greyish-green camo pattern (gotta outdo grassi and the houndstooth).

Whoa. These things came in today. Growing on me, but a little whacky. My oldest daughter in typical brutal honesty kid fashion, "said, man....those things are ugly!" From a distance, I look like an army guy, and up close, they kinda look like a lizard's skin. The pattern is actually cool, but the greyish green color is kinda bizaare. I think Grassi will be proud though.

I've had everything from colored pants and black jackets to black pants and colored jackets...an all yellow TNF one piece back in the early 90s, a sweet tweed obermeyer with a fur collar...stuff that blends in, stuff that sticks out, stuff that's camo in the trees...black pants and forest green jkt, etc. Bright jackets may not be great in the woods for stealth missions, but if you ever get caught in a slide, the brighter the better.

The only outfits that bother me are the ones that are just blatently wrong for the conditions...and park rat pants that sag off the kids ass...just plain stupid looking...you wouldn't play football or run track in pants that don't stay up, so why try to ski with your pants falling down? I've got baggy cargo pants, got no problem with the baggy pant look...but they fit at the waist.

Otherwise, wear whatever the hell you want...as long as you're warm and comfortable, you're dressed appropriately.

If you can afford a new outfit every year, kudos to you and thanks for keeping the snowsports retailers in business. Besides, the mountain is one of those great places where you get to wear outfits and colors you might not get the chance to in your daily grind.
