Well, I've reached the annual new low in terms of the ski jones. I've started to re-read my trip reports from last season...

What do you do to help alleviate the jones?

I have been stopping at my local ski shop to browse the new inventory, drop my skis to get the summer wax stripped off and have my bindings adjusted, and to simply BS with the staff about the upcoming season. My daytime fix has been studying the trail maps I have posted at my desk.

Your report on Loon from 3/16/2005 has a link to old videos i guess. I just happened to stumble upon it looking for videos and pictures. to feed my jones so to speak. there is so much video of people in powder, trees etc that when i see a link to bump skiing, i get all giddy.

I check mountain west webcams to see snow, wear my boots while watching tv, surf ski stores for deals and new inventory and read Alpinezone ( of course- and as they say misery loves company.)

Here ya go. I found two:

Greg on Rumrunner 1

Greg on Rumrunner 2

Go easy on the technique critique. That was a bit earlier on in my mogul career... ;) Some glaringly obvious issues - way too wide of a stance; little in the way of good A&E; and erratic and way too firm pole planting/swinging...

Read and post in forums alot more.

Day dream like you wouldn't believe about skiing pow. Actually, i normally day dream about one run the previous season, the one where it was just perfect. Alone in a trees, first one to hit it and i got my groove on. Last year it was Jay on March 4th. Beyond Beaver had not been easily accessible that day, had to take the Bonaventure and hike just a tad to get to it. The year before it was a 27 inch dump at SR (I know, I know, how the hell did SR get a 27 inch storm). First one into the local cut woods, i'll never forget that one.

thanks man nice vids.
a) give yourself some more credit. there were some sequences of nice turns.
b) you've certainly improved since then.
c) i swing my hands too far and i've been at it alot longer, its a very hard habit to break.

So many other activities to occupy your time and thoughts..........

All: The skiing jones thing I feel is often due to the fact that many skiers do not have other activities that they love just as much. By filling the time between the last run and the first run of the next season with other great activities, I find I never jones to ski. But in reality, these other activities are done to be "ready" to ski.

For most skiers, I would strongly consider a mountain bike. Good, solid, single track riding is so similar to woods skiing, that not only does it provide a thrill and require skills mastery, but the physical exercise will really help the skiing.

Next, fall hiking is so close to skiing as well...........Go hike the ski area. Again, the exercise is great and the views are super and this allows the day dreaming that some alluded to, even better. You are in the mountains, the colors are changing, the weather is cooler and you know that soon you will get to slide down the mountain vs walk.

I would also get a sea or whitewater kayak. Both will allow another seasonal activity that will take away the jones, let you buy gear like so many skiers just have to do, and even load more stuff on top of your car.

Finally, as you move to August trip planning should begin and as you pull out the tights for the fall mountain biking, begin to go hike in search of new stashes or BC routes all of a sudden you'll find you are having a great time getting those last rides, kayaks and hikes in...................and then you wake up one morning (especially when you live at 1600 feet) and the whole yard is white..........................and the new season has begun.

So get out and hike, bike, and paddle folks. The fall is one of the best times. If that doesn't cure it.................well pour yourself an IPA, head down the basement and flex your boards............it'll be snowin' soon!

My problem is I don't browse well. If I see it and I like it I buy it. Been buying alot of gear this summer. Feed the jones by working, so I can enjoy the winter. Really earning my turns.

The new Meatheads flick is premiering here at UVM. You can bet that I'll be there. The TGR Anomaly Tour is hitting Burlington next month too :daffy:

Sound advice. Add sailing and playing with a trainer traction kite to that list too-

Or learning to work with resin and fiberglass.

Or even building your own kayak. Ask nlmasopust about that one...
