Depends on the terrain and what I'm the mood for. Plus, there are situations where I'll throw a skid into a carving turn to scrub some speed... whatever fits the mood.

Hey, Patrick says that isn't WC style!

Ahhh, give 'im a break. He's learning

It is true, that a real mogul turn is in fact a carved short-radius turn (meaning that tails are following tips -- see http://www.mogulskiing.net/technique_guide_4.html and http://www.mogulskiing.net/misconceptions.html).

I do a lot of both. When I'm skiing good bumps, I'm skiing good bump carves (attempting to emulate the pros). But I enjoy a little skidding here and there, especially on trail edges. It's always fun to do some real fast check turns as well, which aren't really carving or skidding... just hoppin' an' edgin'.

But I can carve a nice GS turn on my bump skis if I feel like it. That happens about twice per season, though. I get zero thrill out of alpine carving. I'm glad it makes a lot of people tick, but I just get bored out of my mind. I may be lynched for this, but I even get bored skiing pow in the trees. Now pow on bumps... that's a different story. As we've been discussing on mogulskiing.net, once you become a "mogul skier," you never look back! :p

This man is one of the best carvers around! It's a pleasure watching this 300 lbs gorilla gracefully glide down the trails.

Thanks buddy. Hope to see you and V out there next season for some carve-o-rama sessions!

If I carve on my board - people are like "ooooh thats great!!!"
If I skid on my board - people are like "Damn snowboarder pushing all the snow off the trail.."

There's a guy at K with a carving board and hard boots. Amazing stuff. He can practically lay down on the snow in each turn. I love watching him.

I ride with a couple "carve fathers"..

I'm the guy that people on the chairlifts say - "I love wathcing those carvers - but the one guy seems to be skidding and pushing all the snow off the trail" :)

Did anyone every prove that boarders push more snow than 2-plankers? I always thought it was a tie.

Separately, I ski with a good friend who boards; it's a lot of fun - we both push each other to do things/go places we might not otherwise if we had stayed separate.
:spread: hey, where's the boarder icon:eek:??

Apparently our one edge of smaller length pushes more snow then 2 edges of longer length. And since its a wide board the sound resonates way louder then a ski so it sounds louder so it must be worse.. I believe sound is in direct relatation to the amount of snow "pushed"

I think the board is louder, but I think that pushing more snow would dmaped the sound, not make it louder?

dmc's point is it's the perception that since it's louder, more snow is being scraped up.

Perception is everything to people that don't really understand or care to not think about it....

The only time I see boarders scraping off the snow is when they kind of plow. ( might be wrong term) I see skiers do that when they get in over their heads on a steep pitches. Really nothing that I think about.

Watching snow boarding evolve over the past ten years They get a bad wrap. Any one you see snow boardingis relatively knew at it. I mean I have been skiing for 30 years and snow boarding only came along big time in the past ten. You have almost as many boarder on the hill. So 5 years ago you saw a lot of boarders scraping the crap out of thing becasue there were so many newbees. Now I see about a 50/ 50 split of scraper culprits. It just getting up to speed. I am sure I was a scraper when i first started but I cant remember it.
