Eric,

A great idea that I doubt other resorts will ever try. Most resorts have shut down chat rooms because of the local skiers who posted honest condition reports that conflicted with the "official" report.

It's funny because I think alot of skiers who know MRG expect widely variable conditions no matter what. Those who expect to go there and find an abundance of overgroomed boulevard cruisers would be disappointed and I think that in this case MRG is wise to be as honest as possible.

In this regard, as in most other regards, MRG is unique.

More from MRG's Marketing Director

No Greg we have no intention of adding a general discussion forum. We have that outlet already for our shareholders. That is enought o handle as it is. If folks want a voice in Mad River Glen they can buy a share.

If you noctice the "sticky" leading off our forum it says the following;

There has been some question recently of expanding the interactive snow reporting forum to an open forum wherein any user could initiate topics and discussions. Though most forums indeed follow that function it is doubtful that this one will take such a road. There are many reasons behind this decision, but here are a few of them. First and foremost even this "interactive snow report" is still something that we are beta-testing and the look, feel, and functionality will no doubt continue to change. Second our major goal here was to provide skiers with a chance to respond to our snow reports and discuss conditions at the mountain as well as to allow Mad River the opportunity to back up its claim of "The most Honest Snow Report in the Business". Further anything that appears on the Mad River Glen website is something that we are responsible for maintaining and moderating, and, quite frankly, moderating an open forum is something that would doubtless become quite time consuming. Finally there are already several outlets for discussion or various issues at Mad River Glen. For shareholders we have a discussion mailing list and a direct mailing list to the Co-op Board, and non-shareholders are welcome to contact the office directly with concerns, questions, and suggestions. In reality the duplication of such a medium here would also be a duplication of effort on the part of the management and yet another thing those interested in issues surrounding the Co-op must monitor.

Thus we would like this forum to function solely as a medium for skiers to respond to our snow reports, and devoutly hope that it will be self-moderating; that people will refrain from off-topic discussions herein.

You're a good man, Eric. I'm particularly fond of the blast of honesty- "If folks want a voice in Mad River Glen they can buy a share." Nice job.

Just noticed the "newest member" is Mr MRG, Jr, IT/Communications director at MRG. Welcome aboard, preemptively. It's good to have some insider info, especially if it's honest.

All opinions stated here are the author's own, and in no way reflect the opinions of this forum, its members, moderators, or administrators.

I'm a novice skier, and not yet ready to take advantage of MRG, but I have to say that the posts here both about and by MRG leave me very impressed, and itching for the day someday soon when I can handle the place.

jay, while most of MRG will probably to tough for you to ski, MRG does have some gentler groomed trails such as the birdland area and the practice slope. though in all honesty, i can think of better places to go where you would get more bang for your buck as a skier still learning. definitely something to shot for, i remember the MRG slogan taunting me for years before i had enough skill to ski everything on the mountain.

On Friday, Killington's Snow report said 19 lifts open. It was more like 6. They opened the K1 Gondola by 1pm.

I am amused to read MRG's reports when the conditions are bad. It reads like, "Trails range from glare ice to mixed rocks and mud patches. Skiers are advised to exercise caution when entering the woods as almost certain death awaits. All in all it looks like another great day on the mountain!!!!"

Seriously, though, I wonder if MRG helps to keep Sugarbush relatively honest. After all, when SB says 8-10", they're going to look foolish when you pick up MRG's report and it says 4-5" from the same storm.

The guys with the rulers at Alta are the WORST Liars.
alta.com Check out the the "picture of the day archives " for Jan 31st. next to last. But yet they report about 5" of snow the past few days.

They always seem to do that.

Loon reported 42 inches out of the Thursday storm. 15" Thursday morning, 27" that evening. I can understand making a mistake and not listing the 27 as a total, but it wen tout to all the snow report sites as 42". I seriously doubt the 27" alone, and have some doubts about the 15". Sunapee got 10-15, and it was an honest, maybe even short, report.

big K full of lies

The big K report 22" on their site Friday afternoon...I can tell you they are full of S$%T...There is no way 22" fell...Conditions sucked on Sat...And everyone I talked to on the lifts were pissed about the report especially those whoe drove 3 hours from Boston for a day of skiing...The snow fall was more like 4"...Just like they reported 7" fell sat night, I bet it did...I think the big K measures snow in the parking lot piles with a ruler that starts at 6"...

I know the resorts need to make coniditions look better than they are to attracted business...By lying it only pisses people off and makes them less likely to visit again in the future...If you're a die hard skier like myself your going to go skiing no matter what in the winter...And I would be more likely to go to a mountain that was honest consistent on the reports...

I experienced the same thing on the previous day Friday. In the woods, the snow they reported seemed accurate, however on the trails it was windblown and hard. It seems you have to take Killington's Snow Report with a grain of salt as they take poetic license with their descriptions.

Sunday River got quite a dumping while we were there. The storm packed some big winds during Friday...Downdraft had four foot drifts on one side and ice on the other. I guess that was the only downside...the wind closed most of the mtns.

This "stripping of the snow" is another disadvantage of the new wider trails..I bet that the trees at Burke and the narrow trails were sweet. Sunday River's trees (Last Tango and Wanderer) were great on Friday.
