So very damn tempting!

As seen at our local Columbia/Mountain Hardwear Outlet store:

Official Mountain Hardwear Ski Patrol and/or Alta Staff jackets!

375 smackaroos and you never have to worry about getting in trouble for ducking ropes and you can cut the lift lines! ;)

Until the patroller sees you and is like "Never seen him on the hill before".....

But if a ski patroller said something to you, you could say you just like supporting your Swiss heritage :) :) :)

I think you should.

I dunno, 375 bucks, plus you would probably need the chest pack thing (not sure if Alta has that or a backpack) to pass as a patroller, and you'd eventually get figured out.

Eventually a skier/boarder would ask you for help, and what would you say?

I think in the end you'd just be asking for trouble. I'm not sure how the mountain would respond, but I'm sure they wouldn't like it.

I'm pretty sure TTB was joking

I bet this is going to turn into a very long winded thread

I'd go with the staff jacket. The patrol jacket might be more useful, til somebody needs help and you're the "patrol" on duty. How can they sell these to John Q Public? Are you sure you can buy them?

I was (half) joking. I liked the Alta ones, but they aren't too useful or practical since they are employee gear and I'm not an employee. I don't have a nametag.

I'm damn surprised that they are selling those in a store to the public. That would be pretty bad for someone to be skiing around in a ski patrol jacket and not have the skills needed to help folks.

Alta does not use those Ski Patrol Jackets. Theirs have the Alta Logo on the back....they have a snowflake and not the cross.

Also surprised that they are selling Alta staff jackets...with the name tag holder and everything.

But I grabbed me one of these for $25:

I couple of years ago when I was at college at UMass Amherst I was looking at mountain bikes for sale, the only one I really liked said "Police" on it, but the staff said they couldn't sell it to me unless I could prove I was a cop (or I asked them if they'd sell it to me if they took the letters off which they'd consider)

I wonder if they'd actually let you buy that, or if you'd have to show an Alta work email or paystub or something

Talked to the clerks at the register about them. Said I had to do a double take. The guy said he was surprised as well and joked around. For some reason I don't think that they would check someone's creds...just hand them the cash.

The ski patrol were only smalls. The Alta ones were a few different sizes and had they not been $375 and not had the name tag holder I might have snagged one (and then been shot by the wife).

And to be clear: the ski patrol ones had no mountain logo on them. Just the cross on the front and back.

What's the problem?

My friend just bought an unmarked police car at auction for 4 grand, 80,00 miles. Dark tinted windows, push bar in front, those little cop antenna's on the back, front spot lights & yes hidden interior flashing lights front & rear. Nice Impala.

Yes he has a license & registration.

The ultimate highway cruiser, bet no one will be camping in the fast lane in front of your buddy. Throw a ski rack on it, it'll look even more like a cop in the mirror with today's low profile light bars.:D

I can see it now, flying to the mountain in a fake cop car, wearing a fake ski patrol jacket, only thing better would be a retired cop 4x4!

The only problem would be if a skier abused what that jacket stands for. Whether they use it to poach closed trails or skip lift lines, both are wrong. From a safety standpoint, it's a bit different than an unmarked cop car. There are a lot of civilian owned unmarked cop cars on the road like your friend bought. What there are not on the road are a lot of civilian owned marked cop cars. Only one I can think of seeing is the Blues mobile. There's probably good reason for that. You don't want to confuse civilians in a life safety crisis.

Trailboss, did you ask the store why they were selling the jackets? I've never seen that and would've found it pretty strange. Alta probably doesn't need the cash selling used Ski Patrol jackets. (or wherever those jackets are from) Therefore, it seems like the store trying to make some cash on the jackets. That doesn't seem like good business to me considering what's at stake.

They're brand new. Tags and all. Just didn't sell for whatever reason. Like other things there at the outlet, past season and/or overstock. The fact that they were selling obvious ski patrol jackets really seems odd. I guess they figure a patroller would want an extra one? They were made as part of the pro-deals/uniform sales--the tags said uniform. I asked out of surprise. The guy just joked about it. The Alta ones are cool.

FWIW a few years back I bought a softshell from Patagonia that I think was for the same thing...ski patrol/uniform sales to resorts. It is red and black but does not have any patches or logos on it. So that is no surprise, but selling them with ski patrol markings is odd.

I also imagine that Alta is going to use different shells this year.

And an Alta staff jacket won't get you very far at the lifts. Like other places employees must have a pass.

Googling "ski patrol jackets" yields many websites selling them. I don't know if they require any proof of belonging to the National Ski Patrol to purchase them, I doubt it. This also came up http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090122182134AAyPMlB Makes sense, they all know each other, and who's on duty. I'm sure you'd be confronted if you wore one while you skied.
Here's a thread on TGR about people buying a Burton reversible patrol jacket to poach http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php/232943-Burton-Patrol-Jacket-seen-one-yet

A couple of years back, Burton produced a ski jacket with crosses similar to the National Ski Patrol (NSP) uniform..
It caused quite a stir that people could be masquerading as patrollers with no medical training or equipment.
My patrol and others were advised to specifically look for said jackets or "new" patrollers.
NSP sells uniforms direct from HQ, with very strict directives on where/where not to wear your colors.
Not worth it IMO.

See, these were legit "uniform" jackets from what I could tell. I don't know the specs for NSP, but my impression was that Mountain Hardwear made these for NSP and they got returned because they didn't sell. So throwing them on the rack to the public makes me go

And Cornhead they had Men's Small and (maybe) a medium. Still interested?
