As many of you know, the spammers are attacking pretty heavily lately. Many of them are registering with Gmail accounts so I have decided to disallow any future registrations using Gmail accounts. This will not affect any current users that have registered with a Gmail account.

just curious, gmail being fairly popular, is there an alternative, like if you register with gmail your first post gets "quarantined" and has to be approved by a mod? after that you can post at will?

I look at this initially as a test to see if it will significantly reduce spam posts.

Agreed, it pisses me off when I can't use my yahoo or gmail acct - mod approval is teh way to go for these methinks.

I have admin approval for registrations set for SkiADK and SkiMRV. It's a nightmare. I have to comb through probably 50 new regs a day, at least. The mods here do enough work on a volunteer basis. I would never ask them to do any more.

It does seem like a drastic step, seeing how popular gmail is. I hope that the user gets a friendly explanation as to why their email address is blocked.

i thought this might be the case. perhaps you should enlist some "junior" moderators, with limited powers. maybe GSS could work his way up through the ranks.

I think that's a pretty good idea actually.

Unfortunately, spammers will use whichever accounts they can get free and easily. I had a hotmail email address that I had to ditch because sites were blocking all hotmail addresses; I'd hate to think the same will now happen with my gmail account. Sucks that some bad apples ruin it for everyone else.

We added a human verification question and basically all spammer registrations have stopped. Should have done this years ago...
