First time ever. As a direct comparison...last year at MRG the day before opening. Prolly 30-40 ppl Skinning ans skiing. Patrol opened Starks nest, Got the fires going and the heat on. As I was warming up after a lap, one of the patrolers announced he was going to head out and start putting ropes up. The head of patrol stopped him and said, " let's let these people have their fun before we start roping things off."
That's the difference between a community and a monarchy.

In answer to your original question, Sugarbush does three readings of snowfall, from specific, fairly wind protected spots. One is a little below the top, one mid, and one at the base.

That you didn't find the amount, it could have blown away from where you were, or melted in, as it was early November, and uncovered ground eats snow quickly.

But Sugarbush is generally complained about by those that ski here as under-reporting. You won't believe that, but anyone reading your posts here will see you have "issues" with Sugarbush.

The totals reported for the season start when the season starts because they are the "totals reported for the season."

As for not allowing hiking, that is the policy. It doesn't go over well with everyone, but that's their call. As for it not sitting well with you, most of the paying customers won't really be affected by the fact that someone who isn't paying is not allowed to ski.

There are people here who like to hike too. Some of them went to MRG, when Sugarbush was closed. We get over it.

Skiing was great this weekend. Beat my skis up a little, but that's what they are for, and if you ski natural snow, early... you beat your skis up a little. ;)

I had no issues with the place until I wasted an afternoon to drive over there on some bull$#!T snow report and got hassled after we got up on the mountain and realized that despite the "solid foot of snow" that week and mid winter temps, all the snow had apparently vaporized. Had nothing to do with the fact that is was the day before opening. They would never pad numbers and mislead to encourage people to make the drive up for the first w/e would they? Oh wait, yea they did. I know becaue I read the report and went there and looked around...it really doesn't get any simpler. They reported "x". Reality was "x-9 inches". Your explination of "must have all melted is bogus because it was like 9 degrees at the top. Wind blown snow in one place means wind load in other places....there was just no snow. That's it. That's all. End of story. Will this rediculous thread see 10 pages?

It will end when you learn to correctly spell words like "rediculous" and "explination" and not a moment sooner. Please stay at Stowe, with the rest of the self-proclaimed core - more "alleged" snow for me.

They had plenty of people, and the only complaints I heard (and I ask) was that there wasn't more terrain open, and that Heaven's Gate went down for a couple hours on Sunday.

My saying you have issues comes from reading your posts. Take it with however many grains of salt you wish.

Tin Woody quotable quotes....

"know you and Lostone are on a crusade to convince everyone that LP is the better option, but let's keep it factual. Which two lifts would you be referring to? You didn't actually tink he was..."
From another sugarbsuh thread.....Tin Woody....what does "tink" mean...wtf RU, Archie Bunker in real life???

" think a good compromise is to count anything that's fallen within the last 48 hours prior to closing or soemthing to that effect. You would need a hard and fast rule of some sort."

Soemthing???????

" love it. You spew about how SB misleads customers with its snow reporting, and yet you turn around and ask why they wouldn't count pre-season snowfall. Really? so it's perfectly legitimate to... "

Ummmm? Shouldn't the "s" in "so" be capitalized???? Dumb Dumb.

and my favorite example of Tin Woody's mastery of the language arts....he can's even spell Sugarbush.....
"In my experience, Sugarbuhs is pretty good about their reporting. They don't include pre-season snowfall in their annual totals like many VT resorts and I haven't seen a pattern of consistent... "

Boy, the IS fun.....

not.

But this! This next one is my all aout fav. It Tin Woody ranting about Shillington misleading people. Ironic from my perspective. The best part of this one is the fact that he adm,it to something I've suspected all along. He does, in fact, wear panties.

"But what is the use of participation when it consists, in large part, of information that seems intentionally designed to mislead. I'll provide two examples:

1) The snowmaking time requirement discussed above. I think HS showed admirable restraint as he walked through the publically available numbers and applied standard 5th grade math to that. So the good readers here think that it takes 8-10 days of optimal conditions to open K-Mart. What Tom didn't say was that this figure is intentionally designed to produce two effects. First, it lowers expectations for the gullible public (i.e. the Jersey Joeys of the world) who take it at face value. Lo and behold, when they are able to open after "only" 5-6 straight days of snowmaking, they are heroes. Second, it takes the pressure off of them with respect to their ability to open early. They've made a conscious choice that they will only open T2B from K peak, and that there must be a few ways down. Given that we know it's taken them less than 24 hrs of acceptable (not optimal) weather to cover Rime, I am stunned that people would fall for this.

2) Release of skier days. What got my panties in a bunch on this was that Tom came here and lied. He said that as a private company, they do not feel obligated to release their skier visit figures. Yet, these figures are available for POWDR owned Mt. Bachelor, and at least the % increase/decrease figures are available for the mothership in Park City. Clearly, they are trying to hide something during what is a sensitive period for their efforts to build the village.

Participation here by industry reps is only as useful as the accuracy of their words. Dont' get me wrong - I fully expect any industry rep from Win on down to some marketing peon to try and shade their answers so as to represent their resort in a favorable light. When you are being straight-up lied to, that's a different story. The rep loses credibility, and if left unchallenged, AZ loses credibility for being a mouthpiece. "

PS
Shouldn't it be "Low and behold"
As in..."Low and behold, a thong under Tin Woodsman's Skirt????

I think our Woodsman was 100% dead-on with those comments. He accurately captured the issue people have with the new KMart ownership... They've been caught out with total fabrications of the truth and it's going to take years of completely above-board relations to rebuild the trust. No trust, no village. No trust, 1% local sales tax.

Win Smith is promoting his ski resort and might have some rounding errors in his favor with his arithmetic but I doubt he's diverging too far from the facts. "A solid foot in the last week" often means it snowed a couple of inches, settled, snowed a couple more, settled, .... If you're there every day, you see it. Customers show up and call them lying bastards even though that's not the reality. I see that behavior from weekenders at KMart all the time. Unless you were there on the ground for that week, I don't think your complaint has a whole lot of merit.

Geoff, you're missing the point.

Actually, he got the point.

As for the rest of your screed, it's kind of pathetic. While I will happily admit to various mistaken typos now and then when my fingers move too fast, I think it's clear that I know how to spell words like 'Sugarbush", "something", and "think". Your inability actually spell words like "ridiculous" (hint - it doesn't have an "e", which is nowhere near the "i" on the keyboard) and "explanation" (hint - there is no "i" after the "L", and the correct letter "a" is aaalllllllll the way over on the other side of the keyboard) indicates you're just not too bright. This failure of the American education system or possibly your own DNA is further underlined by your irrelevant, paranoid rants about perceived exaggerations in pre-season snow reporting. You may be shocked to learn that until the ground freezes for good after a long stretch of below freezing weather, the relatively warm ground melts snow from underneath. It should therefore not be surprising that you didn't find the foot of snow that SB reported receiving over the previous week. The fact that you then compound this inanity with a complaint that you were "hassled" to stay off of a snowmaking run where the policy was clearly stated just makes you look like even more of a buffoon. Furthermore, this whole situation becomes downright comical in light of the fact that I posted pictures taken no more than 48 hours after your visit to the very same resort, where skiers were buried in 2 feet of light powder with no one "hassling" them b/c they had the good sense to stay away from mountain ops. And then finally, the veritable cherry on top of all this is that you then crticize SB for not counting all of their pre-season snowfall in their seasonal totals. It's almost as if you're attempting satire.

Every time you post, you make yourself look more and more idiotic. Given your post count, there isn't much left in the bank at this point.

So from some REdiculous internet banter where I was obviously trolling the shit out of you, you have come to the conclusion that I am dumb and my family gene pool is shallow. Pretty personal insults. I really could give a crap what some panty wearing woodsman has to think of me, specifically one who judges so easily. Personally, I was shocked that the sugarbush elite were so captivated by what I thought was an OBVIOUS troll, meant more as a punch in the arm then any real rant. Even more entertaining for me was how long and hard you folks have continued to defend, and now insult me after my responses turned into complete nonsense. OOoOOo...I am a bad speller...I guess when you don't have much going for you , you tend to harp on the little things. In school yes, I was the kid always looking out the window. Always wanted to be doing, not being told what to do. I learned pretty early on that I could listen half the time and still get by, which is unfortunately what I feel public school really teaches. Obedience and conformity, 2 things i can't spell and never really participated in. Retrospectively, I'm glad I have always taken my own path. I have a rich life, full of experiences in the natural world that have given me a unique perpective on society and shills like yourself. I feel pity for you.
Who's the bigger idiot, the fool, or the fool who argues with the fool?
On society, I really feel like what is missing in the world is accountablility. I take full accountability for my actions. I wonder if we were standing face to face you would feel so comfortable lobbing insults at me and my family. I generally like to think that anyone on this board would have a great deal in common with eachother, enough so that if we ever met face to face, we would ski, have a blast, dirnk a brew or two, and get along. You take these comments people make on A FREAKING MESSAGE BOARD way to seriously. Keep it in the real world chief....One day we may meet, and you may learn a lesson in accountability. If we ever do meet, the choice is yours...you can insult me and we'll see where that goes...or we could just ski....BTW, thong or boy shorts today?
