All the newscasters had their big phony "its a wonderful sunny spring day" smile on this morning as I flipped around TV. But when I got to Sunapee at 9AM it was all clouds maybe 40 degrees. The snow was good. It had dried out a bit and set up last night so it was groomed to good cord. Mogul trails had that just rained crusty look. Frozen but not ice. Would have been good if it was a sunny spring day. They still have a good base on the major trails. Closing day is April 12th................I was out by noon. Mid December I would have been happy with it. But not now. Screwed by the weatherman. I hope it snows for opening day at Fenway.

Perhaps I should add the second part to that report. I arrived at noon and skied the whole afternoon.
I counted myself so lucky to have caught a super day , well, super afternoon.

By the time I hit the slopes, it was getting very nice and soft. Not too sloppy due to the on and off sun and the temps staying somehere below 40* F if you believed the on thermometers at the lifts. It never really got too hot.
The moguls under the slow lift (Flying Goose or something) got worked over by a small but devoted group of bupmers and the crusted look was gone by about 2 PM. The bumps skied great. Nicely spaced and soft.

The bumps in the Sunbowl were fun as well. The groomers were just fine. Everything, well most everything had a really good cover and with so few people out, you could really just fly down the trails.
I was very pleasantly surprised that the snow stayed more or less on the dryer side. There were some wet mashed potatotes at the end of the day at more exposed spots, but overall, you couldn't ask for better conditions.
Rule # 1 for spring skiing: don't get out too early.

in this case the early bird gets a warm breakfast waiting for the snow to soften up.

Sunapee's bumps and groomed trails usually soften up around late morning to lunch time.

This thread and the report on Okemo make me wish I had the time to get out this weekend...:-(

BTW, looks like the Sunapee Cares and Shares day is pushed up to this Sunday. They still charge $30 for the lift ticket, though...
