I voted for Ascutney. I grew up in White River and Ascutney's only 30 minutes from there. Good vert, good terrain, good value... and good off-piste if you're adventurous! Jay is a good 2.5 hours away and Sugarbush is 1.5 in good weather (sketchy if snowing). The Dartmouth Skiway wouldn't be a bad option either.
Where in the Upper Valley are you living exactly?

Given this info, I'd stick with my initial vote for Sugarbush. Do you get any type of break at MRG with a SB pass?

No...MRG passholders can ski for half-price at SB during pre-season and late season days.

You might want to double check that one.

That was at least what they were doing in 2002-2003. As suggested it might have been dropped...

An update: Ms. Trailboss and I will be living in Wilder/White River Jct, VT right off of I-91. We just signed a one-year lease of a nice 2br unit with a VIEW OF HILLS AND MOUNTAINS instead of pavement and buildings every where. You don't know how psyched I am to get back to VT (and to have my green plates back).

Well, since I'm going to be p'oh for this year and not much time, I was thinking:

Burke Student Pass (xmas present from parents)
Maybe an Ascutney pass or ASC pass (remember: I don't have much money now  ).

And yes, Greg, you are coming up for a trip to Burke. Get ready.

Yeah, I've had not-so-great luck at Jay. A great powder day, but lots of ice and wind otherwise...

No, most of the time the GLADES ARE CLOSED when I've been. I've done a few small ones, but the legendary ones have not been up to snuff.

Burke has some great glades...

Congrats on the relocation. Good ole White River... sigh... I went to school right down the road from where you must be (White River Elem., Hartford Middle School, Hartford High School). PM me if you need some swimming hole advice!

OK, update: We're now leaning toward the Okemo/Sunapee/Stratton/etc College pass for $299. No blackouts, 7 days a week, holidays included. About 35 miles from our place to either Sunapee (all interstate) or Okemo. Might avoid Flatten' though.

I've only been to Stratton and Okemo about 3 times each. IMO they are the same kind of place, unchallenging and catering to society's "upper crust" types. Please explain where I'm wrong.

Distance and $ are nice though.

OK, flatten, yeah. Not too much interest in skiing there. But I've heard many good things about Okemo and their trail map , shows a lot of black diamond runs and some double blacks. They also have some fast lifts it looks like. Have you had any bad experiences there? We'd do K-mart/ASC, but the drive through Woodstock is a pain :x and I've heard that Kmart has not been as good thanks to lots of traffic.

Okemo Black diamonds = snore :D

Okemo is okay for fast lifts and great snowmaking/grooming, but don't look for anything terribly steep.

Double Diamond and Outrage are steep, somewhat gladed trails that have snowmaking, but they are short runs that run out of trail just when they start to get fun.

For me, I like Noreaster, but it now has a terrain park on it :x . Searles Way, World Cup and Jolly Green Giant offer nice crusing terrain.

Jackson Gore is OKAY, the lodge area is very nice.
