No... not totaled... (but not fixed yet either... sigh)

A while ago I told my sales guy (who I bought the A4 through) if he saw any S4s come in to give me a heads up... he called me on Saturday...

Gas mileage and range on those V8's is pretty harsh. I couldn't do long ski trips on less than 300 miles between gas stops.

The "Bad" part is what it would do to my finances...

It was a fun car to drive, but I think I'm passing on it...

Pros:
Very Clean
Very good shape
Every option you could ever want

Cons:
It's a 2005 not a 2005.5 (newer body style that looks much better, IMHO)
Gas Mileage
Maintenance costs
My car is no longer a great trade in prospect (thanks to having been in an accident recently).
It's silver (they're all silver)
I wasn't anticipating making a car move right now...

out of curiosity, what does a 2005 S4 go for? One of my ski buddies drives one but I think it's an 07 or 08..

Dealer was asking $25k

Had every option imaginable, immaculate, new tires.

That's alot for a 5 year old vehicle..I guess in a couple years you can just buy a new one and then you won't have to worry about maintenece..with having an expensive skiing habit..I don't see myself driving anything steezier than a Suburu, if I didn't ski, I'd probably have a Bimmer or Audi..

Audis suck for buying, because they don't lose value, so you can't buy a used one for a good price, adn you can't work a dealer down on a new one. The leases are awful, too. My last car choice, I went A4 vs BMW 3 vs MB 300 vs Volvo C70 (? the coupe convertible). Audi wouldn't even begin to negotiate, my entore parking lot is full og bimmers, and after driving the Merc didn't even go to the Volvo dealer (wish I had, feeling buyer's remorse- I like the Volvo ethos, but surprisingly don't think I've ever even been in a Volvo. Seriously)

I think an Audi would be "this is a f'ing awesome car- I love it, it's so much fun to drive, it corners like balls, accelerates like crazy, love it love it love it" until about the 2nd hour on a basic freeway. Especially in an S, you'd start to wonder, "Wow, that pothole seemed deep. I paid how much for this suspension? Damn, I need to get gas again? Hey, what are those flashing blue lights behind me?"

I love Audis. I think the look great, the A5 is the sexiest "reasonable" car on the road, the A4, though tight, is a well put together vehicle. Just seems that for that kind of cabbage, you could get another car that, despite the shortcomings, you could say "yeah, but it's a Jag."

Not knocking Audis or those who drive them. I'm a little jealous, and my only consolation is that maybe, just maybe, down the road I'd be having second thoughts (still love the C300 Sport 6-speed, btw)

One of Audi's biggest mistake was scratching the bi turbo V6. Smooth revving, loads of power, not too bad on the turbo lag, and yet I was still able to average 26 mph driving like an idiot, on 92 octane, albeit. The V8 was a fine engine, if they wanted to take the S in that direction, I just wish they had made the TTV6 an option on an A4 package or something.

Very cool car. With that 8 and a nice exhaust, who needs a radio?

When gasoline is $2.50/gallon, paying an extra $0.20 for 93 octane in a turbo car ends up being a net win. The weight and internal friction savings gives you better fuel economy than running a bigger displacement normally aspirated car. I regularly see 32 mpg in my VW GTI. The 2.5L 5-cylinder in a Rabbit only gets 29 mpg.

I have so many freakin' points on my license that a 300 hp car would be a huge waste. I rarely use the 200 hp I have. I drive around Vermont with the cruise control engaged at all times. I only use the DSG paddle shifters going down hills to get engine braking.

This...

The B5 S4 was a great car... Weight a little too far forward and the chassis wasn't quite stiff enough, but the power train is great. My buddy has a 2000 S4 that's chipped, and I love driving that car. It is more fun than the V8 S4 is.

I really like my A4, and I'll probably hang onto it for a while... I bought it two years ago with 40k on the clock (about a year and a half of driving for me at the time) for $23k, it's a 2004 with the V6 and has every option except the Nav, Bose and Tiptronic transmission (it was hard to find the 3.0 with quattro, a stick, sport package, premium leather, winter package, etc. etc.)...

But test driving cars is still fun.

Looks like the next car purchase in my future is going to be helping my girlfriend navigate the car purchasing waters... as her 1999 escort is quickly reaching the end of the road...
