The Vail (Resort not just the company) comes to mind as well. Also I heard that Telluride had one shot down at the P&Z level recently. I am guessing the proposed one that Sugarbush wants to build is going to have P&Z issues as well based on precedence
That is showing classism really. It is a real issue in these communities--wealthy, entitled folks who don't want to see multi-unit housing or the folks that "it caters". It's a sad reflection of our society.

My friend was paying ~$1,500 a month to live in an actual closet in Manhattan.

that apartment was about $1600. it was 2010 (my first post schooling apartment, i was in nyc since 2007). it was on 5th street between 2nd ave and bowery, so it was a choice place to be 25 and living alone. i don't regret it. it was a shithole tho - it was a rear building you couldn't see from the street. you had to go down this creep alley to access it. my next-door neighbor was mentally ill and a hoarder and the cops would come for him occasionally. upstairs was this guy who had been in the building for like 40 years and had something to do with bob dylan and was like a part of east village bohemia that never left. interesting years for me.

that apartment is def over 2k now. if not 2500.

I dont give a shit what way they lean politically, both sides care more about making money than anything else. Its absurd to charge 15k a year for college housing (especially the situation you described) and alot of people can’t afford that.
If it was a “luxury” real estate development going in the towns would be all for it but God forbid the “poors” can have somewhere nice to live. The problem is the “few” have so much that its much more profitable to cater to that and act like theres worker shortages, inflation, ect. than actually address the issues.
Yup, it's all about who gets elected to the P&Z committees as they can stop a project, especially if they feel it will negatively effect their property value/lifestyle with the intended folks the porject may be built for.

Look at the recent situation with the pro basketball player, Steph Curry from the Golden State Warriors. The guy has a net worth well into the 9 figure range. Defintely has spoken in favor of many liberal policies. Has a 30 million dollar home in the Sacramento, CA area, and just in the past week has spoken out against the development of a proposed low income housing cluster that would be something like less than a mile from his home.

Look at the Martha's Vineyard Immigrant event last Fall. The wealthy, very ofetn transplanted "locals" (as opposed to the native Vineyarders) saying that they want to help the immigrants, just get them off the Islands ASAP.

heck, I've got a propsed development in my home town now, where there's a 30 acre parcel of land that the town bought a few years ago that is adjacent to the elementary school in town, and the town wants to build 30 units of low income residential housing on it (the land is already zoned for it) and the outcry by a vocal few, who from what I gather are liberal leaning folks, is to not allow it the proceed out of P&Z based on what underneath it all are just a bunch of self centered reasons. The issue isn't that they don't think that more low income housing is needed, they just want someone else in some other town or another part of the town to do it/deal with it. That sucks!

Not racist at all. Your comment shows that you have no fucking clue about what racism is. LDS folks are not a "race" and if you read the Book of Mormon you will see that the text actually states that those of different skin colors are in fact inferior and not blessed by God. Now that is racist.

And if you are a member, take the constructive feedback. We are regularly discriminated against ourselves because of our (mainstream) religious beliefs by these folks. Not at all Christian or constitutional. But yeah, apparently I am the racist.

And let's be real. Your comments about the folks who are the subject of the article and are foreign workers of a different race suggest that you are the one who is racist or at least classist.
Yep, you got me. I meant Bigot,... there I stand corrected. No, I'm not Mormon - I have some great friends that are though. I not afraid to call you out as a the fucking bigot that you are when you go and make a blanket statement about the whole Mormon religion.

martha's vineyard is a dumb example. that was a political stunt by abbot and desantis - two of the biggest stuntmen in the biz. of course they got them off the island there is no infrastructure for them on the island. they also temporarily housed and fed them and welcomed them warmly from what i recall.

You think that they wanted to rent that? There was nothing else.

Seems like you don't know what you are talking about here--these are resort workers trying to make a living and only finding a $12,000 a month property that you think is a fair price. What planet are you on? You have no idea what the discussion was about. Stay in your lane.
Stay in my lane? Ok, noted.

I guess if i wanted to rent a ski in/out apartment at the base of park city I would be paying $12,000/month - its the market rate for that location. Should it cost less?

So f'n what?

Doesn't make it right and also has no bearing on the situation being discussed as the kids said they feared retribution if discussing their living situation.

Again, why stop at 1 person per 100 square feet? Why not 4? Let's get $40k per month out of these suckers!

You guys look like world-class Aholes just as bad as the scumbag landlord.

But hey, as long as the ski areas have enough cheap labor to spin the lifts for wealthy Americans, who cares about these foreigners right? Let the landlords do whatever the F they want as long as the suckers agree to it

'Merica!!!!

Meanwhile these ski areas have all the money they need to develop enough reasonable housing for their workforce

This coming from a guy who works in medical sales, which is far worse in terms of fucking over the average American with the resulting absurd medical bills, is quite ironic.

But fitting for a guy like you.

That’s not at all the point of the article and discussion.

I am chuckling now at the illegal immigrants who were flown from the Southern Border up to NYC recently and apparently put up in a Marriot in Hell's Kitchen and are protestign that they are being told they have to move out of the Marriot, which the gov't is paying for and into a designated shelter (a shelter wehere apparently they're moving some hemless women out of to make space for the immigrants. And now I guess that some of the immigrants are demanding a bus ticket so they can go North into Canada because they don't feel safe being in NYC with the crime and drug situation.

I just hope that sooner than later there are some san adults in the room that aren't afraid to make some adult choices that will likley piss off some of their donor base and we can get a handle on things again. Since it sure seems like a broken system right now!

Guessing there are thousands, if not 10's or even 100's of thousands of small apartments/multi family dwellings across the entire country that have that people to square footage to bathroom ratio you mentioend DHS.

Often they are immigrant extended familes living together, just happy to be in this country, since even though it has some issues, it's still is a far better opportunity for them then where they came from

So to be clear, you have no problem with landlords packing in as many people as possible
as long as the tenants agree to the terms?

No need for regulations at all?

What else should we do away with?

How about OSHA? Who cares if people get hurt on the job. They agreed to the work!

Let's bring back child labor. Have some 12 year olds bump our chairs. That'll help solve the labor issue and we won't even need the J1s any more

It should cost that, but there should be limitations on the number of people occupying the dwelling. As mentioned prior, this is common practice in numerous college towns as a response to scumbag landlords over packing rental units.

It's called common decency

Haha, if you think medical devices are in any way a big part of the reason for high costs, you're an idiot. And I work for a company that has disrupted the market and driven down the cost in our market segment by 30% compared to 15 years ago.

Fitting statement from your typical ignorant self

Not just a common practice in college towns...down the shore in Jersey you'll often see occupancy limits on any vacation rental units. I believe the place my family rented this past summer for a week had a limit of 10...and it was a rather large house with 4 bedrooms.

Occupancy limits on rentals are very common and sensible...

The only person who would buy that line of bullshit is someone who has never had a medical bill.

BIGOT: a person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, especially one who is prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group.

Trail Boss, I don't know you, you don't know me, Based on what you have contributed over the years, I'm sure you are probably a decent guy. I have dealt with racism and bigotry personally over the years. Sorry, but go a reread the blanket statement you made about ALL MORMONS. Let me know if you still feel that is not bigotry and not the wrong thing to say as the moderator of a forum.
