I don't remember Camelback having any tree skiing. Blue and Jack Frost have some but it's limited. The terrain at Elk is also better than the others.

Elk could have legitimate tree skiing, but as you know ironically does not allow it as the owner is a tool. I boycotted the place. Best terrain in PA though.

Camelback, Shawnee, Blue Mountain, etc..... I dont consider that "real" tree skiing, it's like I just went through a few trees and I'm out on another trail. Yipee.

So guys, you got me interested in Elk so I did a little research and see that I might like it because they claim, "It's like skiing Vermont without the drive." That seems like a pretty high bar.

I wouldn't call it a terrible stretch if they said, "like skiing in Southern Vermont" or more akin to the Catskills. Elk's terrain is worlds better than the Poconos.

It looks like a decent place. All fixed-grips. Terrain looks good. What is this about the owner?

I don't know if it's true but the rumor is that an employee was seriously injured skiing the woods years ago and that's when skiing off the trails was banned.

The "like skiing in Vermont without the drive" slogan does have merit even though it may sound a bit dubious - They have an evergreen tree planting program along their trails for snow retention and aesthetics which does a lot for being a much nicer atmosphere similar to areas much further north. The snowmaking and grooming is very good and snow quality is consistently top notch, better than anywhere else in PA and even New York. Many of the trails are narrow and winding New England style runs. The blacks have consistent slope down the side, several runs are always allowed to bump up, and the mountain is actually mountain-shaped like a dome, not a ridge like most PA ski areas, with two different faces and a general layout somewhat like a mini-southern VT mountain

I don't know much about the owner but some of the operational decisions that get criticisms I think do contribute to the uniqueness of the area - such as not upgrading the lifts and the main improvements being planting spruce trees in the off season contribute to good snow quality and keeping it sort of a quaint and aesthetically nice "skiers hill" to the extent that you can do that in PA - I guess much less "industrial" than any other operation in the state would be a way to put it. Very much an attitude of "if you don't like how we do things, you are welcome to go somewhere else"

There are several places with legit glades in PA, namely Blue Knob and Laurel Mountain, but most hills have some sort of skiable trees in the event of real snow.
