On or about Christmas day the drive shaft on Whaleback's main lift broke. I hate it when this happens to small areas that can't afford such a hit during their peak time.

too bad for them.. of course anyone who goes to their snow report gets no update it just says opening day free.. I am routing for Whaleback, but if they cannot do the free/cheap things like update their site or snow phone or clean their lodge, how do they expect to succeed? If these things are neglected one can only assume that real tasks such as chair maintenance are also neglected. But hey look at the beautiful paint job on those broken chairlifts.

This after their groomer was out of commission earlier. Ouch.

I REALLY hope they didn't already spend the money they received for the ski/snowboard camp they had set up this week, they'll have to offer refunds.

"December camp is still a go!

The Whale will open the Jib Port, learning area and tubing for the rest of the vacation. 9am to 4pm for skiing and riding. Tubing will be open from 1pm to 4pm. Stay tuned for more info on the main chair lift."

DoH! I didn't read the whole thing..

Man, I'd be pissed. $160 bucks for their little jib park. It's a fun little area, but it's not exactly something I'd want to be using for 3 days, all day.

Is this season shaping up to be worse than normal for lift problems in the NE? Anyone keep data on this sort of thing? Offhand I can think of/find threads here re:

-- Loon gondi deropement 12/16
-- SR Barker evac 12/17
-- late opening for Wachusett's Minuteman lift
-- Sunapee bearing failure, kid falls from chair
-- now Whaleback

I'm excluding things like the power failure that shut Wildcat for close to a week, Tenney's issues and the mechanical stops that turned one of my rides on the Forerunner Quad at Stowe into more than a half-hour slog on 12/7 ...

Late open at Magic due to lack of public service electric service...

And Red Chair woes.

Yeah, it's been a rough start for the lift ops guys. (I should double check my bail out kit)

Okay, I couldn't help myself. I called the mountain. After listening to a sadly exhausted, yet mildly optimistic announcement of how the lift should be going at noon today with 75% coverage., I pressed zero and spoke with a woman said "they told me the lift should be running at one today". Launch time moved one hour....

Actually, I wish them the best of fortune here. It's the smaller, accessible ski hills that make it possible for so many kids to get started into the sport.

I have a small business where we perform emergency repairs on water supply systems. When something causes us to miss a valuable call it really hurts. The ski industry is similar: the window of opportunity to make money is fairly small and they are already weeks behind. Of course they can't open with a questionable lift either. If they make it this year, I'll go there just out of principle. Jeezum.

This was the front of their site at 1:30. They need good vibes sent their way. It's a shame to see an area struggle, especially this year.
