Sky--you got the hook up?

You know it pal. Tom Meyers (tom@wachusett.com).

I'll let him know to expect your request.

As far as resorts to include.....you guys are hitting them all for me and KUDOS on scoring Win! I have a funny story for you next time we meet on a related matter.

Zand, I think Roy is history.

How about Shawnee Peak? There are rumors of expansion, new lifts, and condos being built. Might be interesting to get the scoop! Talk to Mellissa or Ed Rock.

Magic is great suggestion. Anyone know any contact info for the new owners yet? Sledhaulingmedic? Chris Bradford at Crotched will definitely particpate, I'd imagine. I think David is still at Burke. We'll check.
deal still has not officially gone through... stuck up in paperwork issues.

Riv--

Their AZ challenge did not go well in 2004. I recall you agreeing with this as well...I think...

Yeah I agree. You never seem to get too much info. IMO if you want to know what is really going on at a ski area talk to people. After talking to a few locals and a ski patroller at Wildcat the other day I learned way more than I ever would with one these "ski area challenges"

If you're getting information from the Marketing Director/Communications Manager, chances are you're being fed propoganda. Well-intentioned maybe, but not the hard-core dirt we all crave.

Rather than a bunch of emailed questions, why not take the questions, along with a bottle of Bombay Sapphire and a couple liters of Tonic, to the President of each of the mountains on a hot day in July and chat 'em up. Hike the mountain, talk about why they do what they do and listen. You'll learn more that way than an email questionaire.

Seriously.

Wow A bunch of negativity here. :-? Granted some of the responses in the past have been less than stellar, but we did garner some information. I also like to think that the AZ Challenge has in fact lead to some ski area reps/management participating in the forums (Win is a good example) or at least lurking and posting occassionally. This year we are striving to get reps in upper management or mountain ops involved vs. the marketing/communications department as a lot of these folks might naturally have a "filter" on, or may not know exactly what is safe to disclose or not. We also plan to reiterate that AlpineZone members are a saavy group and can spot canned marketing statements immediately, often pointing out such responses in their feedback. I'm trying to encourage candid, honest and thoughtful responses and will remind them that they will likely gain much more respect and praise by providing them. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing...

So are you providing the booze, Phil?

Should we include Mount Dozer in the challenge?

Yes, we are going to be working on getting better responses, but heck, better than what other sites do.

Agreed. I think we've done more to bridge the gap between the general skiing public and ski area management than any other site that I know of...

I'll second the suggestions of Black Mtn (NH) and Shawnee Peak. Hopefully Wildcat will do it again. Maybe they can provide an update on the sale.....

OK, sometimes you may get good info from locals, but sometimes they're just opinions or rumors. I don't get the negativity about the challenge. It's something fun to read and discuss in the off season. It may not be perfect, but what is?

As with anything, don't take everything at face value. You need to filter through what is given to you and make your own decisions and evaluations.

I'd be glad to supply the Bombay. That stuff is great.

Mount Dozer is a private mountain so they wouldn't be interested in the AZ Challenge.

I agree 100% that something is better than nothing but in the spirit of Kaizan, why not tighen up the process?

Don't take my comment as bashing the AZ Challenge!
