What ski areas will you never ski again?

I had sworn off K-mart for 17 seasons. It was quite a streak. I swore I'd never be back. I lied. (But I also never ski on weekends or holidays.)

That being said, I guess I have no conviction when it comes to these things. I'll probably ski anywhere if the need arises.

Likewise, nor Mount Southington, probably. Just because they're small though, not necessarily a bad experience. In fact, I've never had a bad enough experience skiing that would keep me from a particular ski area.

I'm like that too. I dislike Kmart too, but if they're open real early in the season and I can't wait I might go. Never say never.

Well.........I don't like a few places, but can't say I'll NEVER ski there again. Killington tops the list. I probably won't go there anytime soon unless it's early season and I need some turns or I can be sure it's not overrun (a weekday, perhaps?).

Stratton is #2 - it has no personality and the $74 weekend lift ticket price is ridiculous. I'd go to Ascutney before Stratton, any day, despite the much bigger vertical.

And Wawa has to be on the list also. I really don't like it, it's too crowded and too small, the kids are obnoxious and the conditions are tolerable at best. But, it's only 35 minutes from my house, so I'll be there again at some point next season, I'm sure.

Out west, Keystone is off my list as well. I went there again a few years ago thinking, "it can't be as bad as I remember", but it was. Other than a few runs off the north peak, it's a boring, mainly-intermediate mountain covered with LA types snowplowing in $10,000 worth of gear and clothes. The food and accommodations are great, but the skiing's better almost anywhere else in CO.

I said I'd never go there again, but Austin gave us the hook for free tickets last Sept. I'd go again for free. Pretty big of me I think.

They opened up the Outback a few years ago which has some nice tree skiing, very extensive. That said, Keystone is at the bottom of my list for Summit County.

Would be on the "bottom" of my Summit Cty list as well, but certianly wouldn't put it on a "never again" list...I actually liked it and thought the little "snowcat" rides for 5 bucks were pretty good...at least I got to make a few powder turns when it hadn't snowed for days...

I have skied about 75% of New England and the places that I do not care to visit again are:

Yagoo Valley - My backyard has more vertical
Powder Ridge
Wildcat - Bad snow conditions on all three visits when other areas where much better
Attitash/Bear Peak
Ski Bradford

Mid Atlantic:

Alpine Mountain - I positively hate that place
Tanglewood
Sterling Forest - If they ever reopen
Thunder Ridge
Mount Peter
Holiday Mountain
Shawnee

Key point, you gave it 3 shots. I think some people call it quits on a mtn. if they just have one trip there and the conditions where bad, too crowded, ticket window staff gave you attitude, etc.. You have to give a mtn. multiple chances to really know if it's for you or not.

Personally, I think Mt Snow is the best place I can think of to be on a midweek powder day. As long as you have fat skis, all that intermediate terrain is excellent floating all day where you'd be bottoming out on the ice bumps at resorts with more pitch.

I'm not a big fan of Sunday River. They don't get enough snow so you're typically stuck skiing boring groomed snowmaking trails or rock-hard snowmaking bumps. If the trees have decent base and a fresh dose of natural snow, I enjoy the place. It's also fine in spring conditions.

I have this love-hate thing with Killington.

I agree on Mt. Southington. At the time skied there I would have considered myself more of a novice. My wife and I would have left after an hour but we had already paid for a private lesson. But for a small mountain, our instructor was great. He gave us some pointers and drills that we applied for the rest of the season.

I can understand you're POV. It's my home mountain, and if you know "where to go" you can have a different experience. But thats cool.

Yeah, I agree that it would be better if I knew where to go. But when K-mart is the same time to get to as Wildcat and more than Cannon it just doesn't make sense to me. And if I'm heading towards Vermont Burke is the same time and Jay is just 45 minutes further.

I thought I might have just caught the mountain on a horrible day but when I went to look at some TR's from K-mart locals they said it was a really good day and some of the runs that I thought were terrible they thought were in really good condition.

I'm not going to stick with my slight bout of non-conformity on this one. I can honestly say that I have yet to visit a ski area that I will "never return to." I have had bad experiences at ski areas before (i.e. snow conditions, nasty people, lousy service, etc.) but it won't ever force me to not go there ever again. Whatever the free pass permits, I will follow.

Anybody changed their opinion about ski places after starting a family?
I never imagined I would ski Wawa on weekends but now I ski there a lot
on weekends with my kids. Also I didn't care at all about Breton Woods before
but now I think it is great for family skiing. Priority changes drastically when you
are with small kids.
