As stated by some other erudite posters, the NWS forecast discussion is invaluable. It gives insight into what might happen, when and why, and provides the background needed for you to interpret the weather going forward.

Roger Hill is OK http://weatheringheights.com/

A nice collection of NWS VT resources: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/btv/html/winter.shtml

For the real weather geeks you might enjoy a few BBs that get all fired up about weather, prognosticating etc. These boards are a riot in the winter looking at snow storms:

And one of my favorites, Unisys has a site that brings in all the weather models. This is what the forecasters use:

Last season was Jim Roemer (sp?). That guy was spot on. Well worth the money, particularly in a season that I had the free time to chase the pow.

Unfortunately, he has taken his considerable skills to make some real money in the financial markets. If anyone has the assests to risk and know who he's working for, put your money on him.

i found jim roemer to be hit or miss. i didn't subscribe to his service, but he occasionally publically called for some big ones, always hinting it could be "the" big one, and it never came. i am sure he had a decent percentage, but he cried wolf a few times publically.

the weather forecasters on MRG's web page are insanely good and provide lots of details. last season MRG's page provided two different takes on upcoming weather. scott provides weather updates for FTO and he usually calls them pretty well too and provides tons of background. i appreciate the background more than the actual call because you can kinda get a feel for who is an optimist and who is a realist and read a little into the reports regarding whether you should get your hopes up or not.

Roemer never stopped trading commodities- it's what got him started. Bestskiweather.com is an offshoot of his commodities advising firm, WeatherRisk Institute, Inc, the successor to Roemer Weather, Inc. He has done well for himself (and his clients), and will likely continue to do so.

For me, the fact that his reports drilled down to conditions at specific resorts, rather than just overall weather in a region was a huge help. There are plenty of time that NWS was calling for rain in say, SoVT, and JR was saying snow at Bromley and Magic. It rained in Manchester and snowed at the higher elevations.

Another JR report launched my "Road trip from hell" round trip to Saddleback. The rest of New England got rain (I think the 'Loaf also hit the same pattern). Saddleback it had started as rain and changed to snow and they had picked up about 4-6".

I found his reports to be very helpfull in deciding where to ski in a season where I skied a lot and also was able to travel all over the region to do it. Even if it was available, I don't know if I'd spring for it this season.

I think Jim's reports are pretty useful for deciding if you should buy or short soybean futures, too, just not to us.

I usually use the trees in my yard. When the acorns start falling mid summer...we seem to have bad winters...

By the way this is one of those years...the acorns in my yard ARE HUGE....
