Did I miss something? When did Cannon decide they were going to expand and reopen Mittersill? I had a feeling that it was going to happen eventually, but I just saw this map.
Kind of came as a surprise. And are they actually starting to enforce the no access for that area?

This has been in the works for a very long time now, well over a dozen years. Plans were originally drawn up to incorporate Mittersill into Cannon back when Cannon got its face lift and the Peabody Quad. It never happened because part of Mittersill is WMNF land and a proposed land swap has never happened but is now gaining some steam. The new GM seems interested in expanding marketing both towards the family friendly and adventurous crowds, taking advantage of long under utilized free marketing for unmaintained terrain. Access is not restricted but word on the street is staff has been advised not to discuss Mittersill with Cannon guests. We'll see what happens. I think putting it on the map this soon is a mistake... likely an effort to draw in more skier visits and combat the new expansion at near by loon.

I thought the land swap was in fact completed. The top part of Mittersill will remain USFS land but the lower section has been swapped to the State of NH. They are indeed planning on some sort of expansion, but the details are still a bit fuzzy.

I skied Mittersill this weekend. Lots of tracks, no sign of anyone trying to stop skiers, but also no sign of any trimming or improvements.

The top part of Mittersill is indeed not yet owned by the state. The lift and trail plans require the land that the USFS owns be swapped to Cannon. As I recall, the proposed lift will go slightly higher than the old double, effectively clipping off the bottom of what remains of the Taft but below the TBT.
