As it has been said many times there are ways to get around the crowds. My favorate method is to go on a Tuesday, but staying away from the quad will do.

You are obviously well practiced at crowd avoidance at Hunter. Bravo!

I've said it before and I'll say it until the day I die, Hunter is no more or less crowded than any other ski area. But you have to be a good enough skier to avoid the crowds. If you can't handle blacks and double blacks and you have a serious aversion to skiing with others around you, you aren't ready to enjoy Hunter to its' fullest.

My experiences are limited, but I hope to ski Hunter a lot this season. I ski there for the legit black diamond terrain. Hunter has the most challeging terrain of any area south of Magic in Vermont, by far. Perhaps the North Face at Mount Snow is comparable, but nothing else in Southern New England really compares in terms of challenge. Any advanced skier should be able to navigate around the intermediates that find themselves chopping down the center of a trail that is beyond their ability. For intermediates insisting on skiing from the summit, Hunter is not the right choice.

Cool.... You can be one of those hardcores that doesn't exist! :spin:

Let's hope for some decent slackcountry this winter too...
It will blow your mind...

I'm down. Name the date. Jim pointed out some terrain across from West that indeed looks interesting. How tight/steep is some of that stuff? I'm a tree newbie.

I'll be looking to you for up to the minute conditions. I really wanna ride with you this season, D.

Gregg, back to your orignal question, TNF vs Hunter West? I don't love Hunter (maybe its the vibe, sorry DMC too bad more Hunter skiers aren't as kool as you), but Hunter West, once all the trails are open, is better than TNF.

I think I was born with the ability to not give a crap about "vibe" - that or I'm a New Yorker and it's just another day on 'da hill...

Hunter is not for everyone...

I hear you...it doesn't bother me either. Don't know if it's genetic or learned. But I do see the funky vibe that bothers others.

I think it's more to do with the fact that our group projects its' own vibe and it just drowns out anything else. Alot has to do with who you ski with.

Long live all the Hunter threads! :spread: :daffy:

Now my problem is finding a quick way over there. 84 through Danbury to the Thruway takes about 2:30. Route 23 by Catamount through Catskill to 23A is about 2:15, but that whole 23/9 this/9that area in Catskill is a freakin' nightmare. I think I'm gonna try 8 to the Mass Pike and then down the Thruway first this season. I'd like to find a 2 hour drive time option.

What's up the 23A? I understand that some area was washed out, but should be open soon? Will the road re-open before the season does?

That forum sucks.

;)

Thanks, D. That stetch of road is crazy. Beautiful though.

I make no pretense to develop the forum into anything like this place... I've attempted to take it down and people get pissed... So i leave it up...

D - can you reset my password or something over there? I tried to log in and couldn't. I tried the "forgot password" link and it says my Email doesn't match. Username is "AlpineZone", Email should be contact@alpinezone.com

Thanks!
