Although there are 4 ski areas within an hour of home, I normally don't get out enough to have a home mountain, but I would like that to change next season...

What criteria do people have for a "home mountain"? Is it mainly distance? Do you usually get a season's pass there?

I'd say it's the place you spend the majority of your ski time. Others might have a different diffination.

NICE! Personally, I've been looking forward to seeing this year's version of these threads (1, 2)...

I think for most it has to do with a combination of location and budget. It's a ski area that you can visit for day trips and go there the majority of your ski days. If you have the cheap ASC pass you will drive by those places to ski at a resort your pass works at. I think both of these situations qualify as having a "home mountain".

For people who work at a resort or in a "ski town" getting a "home" mountain comes with the package. Those are the lucky people. For 23 years, that was me. Unfortunately for the past 5 years I have lived on the coast of Maine. Nearest ski area is Lost Valley, then Shawnee Peak, then SR. My son had the ASC pass so he skied SR almost every chance he had.

In the perameters I mentioned in the first paragraph I do not have a home mounatin anymore. For day trips. I will ski Shawnee or Mt Abrams before I will ski SR. If my place in Waitsfield isn't rented then I can ski at the Bush but I am not sure if it can be my "home mountain" anymore.

DMC, Lostone and others that live spitting distance from the lifts, your in the sweet spot of life. I remember those days well. Chances are you will someday tire of it, just like I did, but for the moment enjoy the hell out of it. I especially liked working at and in general, just being at the resorts in the summer. The hiking, the summer events, the views, the causual atmosphere......

For those jonesing to live in a ski town, anyone can do it. It does however require a varying amount of sacrifices depending on your situation.

The wife and I have a plan to return to Vermont after all the kids graduate from HS. Five years to go. It will be so sweet to once again have a mountain I can call my home.

DMC - looking forward to seeing those pics......no pressure

I would say that Smuggs is my home mountain since that is where I had my pass and where I skied the majority of my days. I live in Nashua (soon to be Malden, MA) so it is definitely not around the corner from my house.

After having Magic for a home for the last 5 years, I am offically homeless. The combination of poor snow, management problems and fuel costs made me finally throw in the towel.

I ended up at Killington the most this season, then SR for second. Neither is close to my favorite. Home? More like Motel 6 and Days Inn.

I'm starting to look for a closer mountain to patrol at for next season. By virtue of location, it's unlikely I'll be at one of my favorites. Homeless, for now.

Bummer, you were our Magic connection...

Let us know where you'll be patrolling next season.

Jiminy Peak is 16.4 miles away. I’ve been skiing there since the early 80’s. It’s not big, but it is very close and I get a season pass. I’m there once every weekend and a couple of nights almost every week. Don’t tell my wife, she thinks I’m having an affair. Anyway, that’s a lot of time at one resort. I would like to spread it out a little, and when I retire I hope to get an ASC pass. With that I will hit the road a little bit longer each trip and hit places like Mount Snow and Killington.

After our discussions hiking GoS, I'm not surprised. Too bad, but it's really Magic's loss.

I kind of laughed at the word "homeless" in the title of the thread at first, but thinking about it I would be at a total loss if Hunter closed or I couldn't go there anymore for whatever reason. Sure, I could go to Belleayre, Windham, or Plattekill (probably where I would wind up despite the uncertainty of the snowpack year to year), but it just wouldn't be the same.

I really would feel homeless.

 Great line.

Thanks.

When you think about it I guess it is kind of like an affair:
It takes a lot of my money
I'm somewhat passionate about
It is purely physical
You can work up a sweat
I'm always working on my technique
I get a lot of instruction
There is a lot of up and down ( well maybe not a lot anymore...)
At the end of it all I'm usually very satisfied

My wife claims I have two mistresses:

My Skis and the fire service. (I'm still trying to figure out how I can have a threesome...)

ROTFLMAOSTC

I should have thought of that. (I skied at the FF muster at Mt. Why-choose-it).
