Why is Alta getting so much love here?

In another thread, people are voting which one resort they would choose if they had to choose only one for their life.
And Alta is getting a lot of love there.
What's so special about Alta?

I'm also surprised that Vail is getting no vote. I really liked Vail.

simple. Alta gets over 500" per season doen't get as much tourist traffic as it's neighbor in LCC, snowbird. Also, day tickets are very inexpensive as compared to other neighborhood resorts

Agree with what ozzy said, it is also one of the easiest resorts to access due to its proximity to slc airport. For this reason many people have skiied altabird. Alta also still has an old time feel although some of this was sacrificed when they replaced the old germania lift with an hsq.

For as much love as altabird get the bcc resorts are in the same class and get a fraction of the attention

Cause vail is flat, gets about 2/3's at best the snowfall of Alta, is a total clusterfuck with crowds, and has nowhere near the terrain of Alta. This is coming from a snowboarder.

It's not the same with fast lifts but still an incredible mountain.

500" and 2000+ acres of kick ass terrain

plus......soul

I have not been there to experience it. I have been to Vail and the sheer size is appealing. That said, the place completely lacked soul.

Soul - a hard to define, but very important aspect of what makes a ski area appealing to me.

U;kk be there in April so I'll see what all the fuss is about but I know it's a steep mountain from pictures. I think I'm staying at the base of Snowbird. Wow 2,000 acres..Jackson Hole is 2500 acres so it's almost as big as J-Hole..it must be really wide..Is the 2,000 acres all lift served or is some of it hike to?

We all know about the snow & terrain, but don't forget the on-mountain dining too... I just about choked at Vail after paying almost $15 for a cup of soup & small gatorade this year (had to steal a soup spoon.. thinking of engraving "$15 Vail Spoon" on it). Last year at Alta I got to enjoy the new on-mtn grill (collins?) below the old Germania lift. I was shocked on going into the 3rd floor restaurant - you get off the elevator, given slippers to put on, set down with good views, and served at essentially the same prices as in the cafeteria below. What a deal.

I'd have to agree that Alta has that Cannon old time feel to it. The first thing that impressed me, even before I got on the first lift, was that the lift ticket was about half of what I was use to paying back east, and for all that incredible terrain and snow conditions. We got to the first lift before it started spinning, and the vibe of the crowd was just so laid back and casual, no fancy one piece suites, just nice friendly people really into their mountain. After the second run, I knew this was someplace really special. Skiing back East has never been the same since I experienced that place!

I only made it as far as Snowbird in LCC and clearly the combo of snow and pitch is awesome. I like Vail too, and if you are looking for groomed terrain and lift access it is great. I think the answer is because it really is that good.
