For the people who live in a ski town in the east...why didn't you move out west???

That's an easy one. Because at the end of the day I'm still in Vermont. Imagine coming home from the resort to find that you live in Utah. ;)

(I lived in Utah, actually, from the time I was 6 until I was 28. I've still got friends and family there and the natural parts are beautiful, but I prefer to live in a state where adulthood has been legalized, where you can get a beer that's stronger than 3.5%, and where the valleys aren't billboards, strip malls, and subdivisions as far as the eye can see.)

Well lets see. Move to Utah and have half our income. i think we could pull it off. My wife's a bartender and that state is a little on the dry side, but Park City is kind of a happing place so maybe she would do OK. utah is booming and with all the new buildings going up and me being a building engineer I doubt my income would stay low for long. A smaller house and a few less toys wouldn't bother me if I could ski 8 months a year on the best snow on earth.

My guess is, a place like Sandy, UT would have far more job oppertunities for your wife than Park City.

1. Not a snowballs chance in...Florida
2. Couldn't do it...costs twice as much to live in a ski town...been there, done that, had the debt to show for it...couldn't do it with a wife and kid
3. Yup, I'll stick with this

The How Seriously Do You Take Your Skiing thread got me thinking about this scenario.
Your job, hours, vacations, benefits will all stay the same, but your boss needs someone with your skills in different areas of the country. You are given these 3 choices:

1. Move to South Florida and your family income will double
2. Move to the ski town of your choice and your family income will be cut in half
3. Stay where you are and everything remains the same.

Which would you choose?

1. No way. IMHO Florida is hell that just hasn't fallen below the earth's surface yet. Too hot, too many bugs, too many rednecks suckering the fogys from Ohio and NJ that retire there.

2. The mercenary in me isn't ready to drop my income in half. I'm not sure that there would be that significant an improvement in lifestyle, other than easier access to the skiing. I would miss the access to the more urban areas that we enjoy from time to time.

3. Life is pretty good.

1. No way, no way, no way
2. could live on half, but then I'd have to settle for just one area, not ready for that yet
3. Life is pretty darn good as it is, think I'll stick with whats been working well

I don't currently, but have lived in ski towns.

I just like New England, it's that simple. The skiing is better out west for sure, but New England has a certain sense of place, 'home' if you will that I haven't been able to find elsewhere.

Perhaps the thread title should be "Will You Change Your Life Path" instead of "Would You." Anything else is really just an exercise in hypothesis with a side of dreamy resignation. Nothing I would change about my life path past, present, or future.
