OK, hate to do it, but have to bump this one. Y'all need to share the love. Going on Week 4 of no real new snow. The base is shrinking and surface conditions suck for lack of a better term. We would call it, "frozen gran" in the biz. There was hope that we'd see a pattern change by now but it is not looking good. The Death Ridge is back and not moving off the coast.

I skied at Deer Valley today. In 10 years of skiing there today was the worst conditions I have seen there. That includes a fair number of spring skiing days. Snowmaking runs were decently covered, but hammered from traffic and no new snow. Off trail was not fun. And the grooming sucked which is just shocking. More than one local told me that grooming has sucked all season due to staff illness and "not enough groomer operators." Deer Valley was ALWAYS big on their grooming and always considered the crem de la crem of ski industry jobs. Not anymore.....
And to add insult to injury, this is what the inversion layer looks like over the Salt Lake Valley. Photo taken today 1/30/22 at Snowbird, 3 PM.

Actually I've skied Snowbird or Solitude 6 out of last 9 days. Conditions are firm, but still chalky in a lot of places. Not much snow in Jan, but snow preserved reasonably well due to cool temps. Where I come from, the Mid-Atlantic, these conditions would be superb ;)

PS: best wishes to you New Englanders with current storm. Aren't some of the Maine ski areas supposed to get a bunch of snow??

New Hampshire can be fun, all taken this weekend at ragged - too stoned to be selective. I will always choose eastern trees with good snow.

A minute from the Alta exit off the I-15!
A bit firm and bone dry. We had a couple small "storms" of 2-4" at Alta in the past couple weeks that made the snow day and the following day fun. Still have a good base. High Traverse was trash a week ago...haven't/won't ski it since. It's all part of the game, right? On the bright side, I budgeted losing 10 days of work due to avalanche control and interlodge/late opening. So far I've only missed half a day due to an AM road closure. 10 days of work is 1.5 months of rent, new boots/skis, new snow and summer tires. And as a newbie here the hours/days worked can be tough to rack up... and it correlates to a ton of HR benefits and end-of-season bonus so I'm not complaining too much this first season if I can get to work all but a couple days!

At least we got that base. Thank God.

A bunch of ski areas in the Southern Rockies, Taos, Telluride, Crested Butte, etc. might get about 8" on Tues-Weds. Wolf Creek might get 18".
