You Must Ski this Weekend

Seriously, this is the weekend to go. All the resorts in Upstate NY and Northern New England will have fresh snow, favorable temps, and few crowds. Here in the Mad River Valley, at least, there are still plenty of vacant rooms to be found.

I know that weather forecasts are a crap shoot, but it looks like rain and warm temperatures next week, which means that MLK weekend might be a bust. Beyond that, I'm sure the weather will turn favorable again, but with the last couple of disappointing weeks and the weather turning bad again, this weekend will be the best stretch in a month to hit the slopes.

I'll be out this weekend for sure. As far as MLK weekend goes I saw an accuweather.com forcast that looked pretty good, at least for the North country. Keep your fingers crossed.

Well, the advice is of the sort to make people say, "well, duh, look out the window, KingM," but sometimes we just need a kick in the butt. Give us a Loon report when you get back.

Highpeaksdrifter, Accuweather looks better than weather.com, but we still have that mid-40s nonsense in the middle of next week. Still, I've seen some dramatic forecast changes, so I'm still keeping my fingers crossed.

Good advice!

Last night (1/5) Jiminy Peak had very good conditions. Man made powder on top of a firm, but carvable base. No bare spots. Very few blue ice spots. Coyote Ridge park impressed me and I don't do any jibbing.

my weekend is tentatively looking like this:

cannon saturday, staying at the hiker's 'dice in gorham saturday night, skinning up sherburne ski trail sunday AM to try out my new AT gear, then doing a half day at the cat. if cannon is good saturday, i may just opt for back to back there.

Just realized we have 19 (count 'em - nineteen) $10 off passes for Sunapee on the 'fridge. Trouble is, they expire this Sunday. So, probably Sunapee this weekend. Anybody wants to go, $10 off!

I will be at Jiminy Peak tomorrow (Friday). I hope to be there by the time lifts open. Look for an old guy skiing alone in a blue powder suit with a blue helmet and either yellow (if its cloudy) or rose goggles, and all metal Volant Power Karve skis. Say hello!

Unfortunately, there won't be much of a base anywhere. With so few trails open, I don't know how you can avoid seeing crouds. The favorable temperatures will guarantee a turn-out.

I hate to play the Cassandra,, but I don't think one wil ever have trouble finding a room in the Mad Valley this season.

Hard to call that one. The forecast is too far in advance. You could see some heavy wet snow which might help. Besides, King weekend would be planned by people who need a three day weekend to get away.

I'm glad you are sure, but I'm not. I have seen these kinds of seasons which in actuality brought on snow-making as an industry, a profession and an art. You'll get some snow, but it may not be enough to support weekend traffic on any more trails outside of the pale of snow-making. Even if you get a good dump and have wide open skiing on all trails. People will have cancelled so many trips or found alternatives out west, that any dedicated skier will find that they will be treated as royalty at these Eastern Resorts. I know what it is like in a ski town when there isn't any snow. I know what your Valley is like when you have a crappy start. I don't envy you at all.

Hey Greg..sorry I missed your message and you. I hit the mountain at about 9:15 and stopped at 3:45. All things considered conditions were pretty good and aside from the early wind, the day was great. Best coverage was on Jericho, and the new BLUE Riptide. I hooked up with a group of five guys on the six pack about 10 AM and we really tore it up. Actually, I'm surprised the Patrollers didn't chase us considering our aggressive pursuit of vertical.

Bummer! I was there just about the same time as you. I searched and searched for someone matching your description, but no luck. I did ask one fellow on the six if he was you and he looked at me like I had two heads. :blink:

You called it right .....although I do not think anyone thought we would get the snow we got today since the so-called experts forcast just snow showers. Tomorrow should be fantastic.
