27) 02/20/23 - Jackson Hole, WY - another 5” overnight and a 14” storm total in the report this morning. However, operational issues. Avy control, wind holds, and an electrical issue on the gondola too. Just AV and Teton til noon made for some big lines. Things got much better once they opened all the other access. Snow was denser than yesterday, def not blower. But definitely fun. I’ve been more chatty here than normal, partially because I’m riding singles and also joining groups to avoid the long singles line, but also bc it’s much more interesting to chat here than in the east because people are from all over the world and are generally high level skiers. Met a bunch of Vermonters. Many different groups of them. At opening I called out a kids Magic sticker on his helmet and chatted the family for a few minutes while waiting for opening bell. Turns out it was @NYDB but 2 and 2 was not put together on the spot.

More big snow tonight!

I dont think it’s a spoiler for anyone for me to say that I LOL’d when the majority of this week’s last of us on hbo took place in post fungal apocalypse jackson town

Belle made a lot more snow in many places. Top part of Belleayre Run was wall to wall bumps. They have a great base on most trails. Their snowmaking has been really impressive this season.

But zero natural snow. Hoping for some storms in the next few weeks. Definitely heading up to VT again at some point soon.

It's been a tough season for snow; I have nothing but good things to say about Belleayre. Even things like good customer service have been emphasized this season. It is a pleasure to ski there.

And while it isn't as challenging as skiing in VT, if it was not for Belle I would not be 6 days ahead of my skiing pace last season and well on my way to 50. Part of that is my attitude of "ski it or don't". It's easy to get a bad attitude when the weather sucks. Just roll over and go back to sleep. I've avoided that crappy attitude this season.

28) 02/21/23 - Jackson Hole, WY - Another 10” in the morning report and snowing heavily all day. Just an epic jackson hole powder day. Mountain ops got the place open super fast. My one complaint is my old shitty goggles finally shitted on me. They got irredeemably fogged/frozen, and the strap was even giving me a hard time staying put on my helmet bc it froze solid. This is no biggie but it happened as I stepped off the tram into a whiteout. I rode rendezvous bowl > middle Hoback about 70% blind. Amazing snow. Should have been run of the day but I was a blind slop. I went into the base shop and bought new goggles.

Day 1, Hoodoo, Oregon. Had some leftover powder since the backside did not run all week. Like a mini Mt. Bachelor, you can ski just about all zee way around. Lots of terrain back there with almost no people. Saturday lift lines were also super short or non-existant. Excellent Indy place.20230204_100419.jpg20230204_103906.jpg20230204_163735.jpg

Day 2.1 Warner Canyon, OR. It's a miracle that this place exists. The town has population around 2k and the county around 8k. Woke up to a nice powder day. Place was very quiet. Was much bigger than I expected, you could ski in about 5 different mini canyons. Easily got fresh tracks every run until we left. Only problem was we were only scheduled for 1/2 a day there and a 1/2 at Cedar Pass CA which is an hour away. Was VERY hard to leave around 12:30, but we did. Such a great place.20230205_123700.jpg20230205_091015.jpg20230205_122413.jpg20230205_110101.jpg20230205_121425.jpg

Day 2.2 Cedar Pass CA. As much as we hated to leave Warner Canyon early, Cedar Pass did not disappoint. There was a good foot of fresh and once again a small amount of people. Another cool place in the middle of nowhere. We enjoyed the powder until they closed and then did the long drive to Yreka.20230205_135511.jpg20230205_144619.jpg20230205_145336.jpg20230205_153536.jpg20230205_154616.jpg

Day 3 Mt. Ashland OR. I think this was the girls' favorite day. There was still lots of power around and they managed to get the chutes open. I didn't think that was going to happen since they seemed to be closed the days leading up to it. They're steep but short, at least you get some nice trees on the way back to the lift. The whole place actually had nice trees every where you went, more trees than you can shake a spear at. Another awesome Indy place.20230206_140224.jpg20230206_091213.jpg20230206_094246.jpg20230206_102608.jpg20230206_105619.jpg20230206_111435.jpg20230206_131115.jpg

Day 4 Mt. Shasta CA. Unfortunately our power luck finally ran out. Most of the mountain faces south and did the thaw/freeze thing. The only super nice snow was in the out of bounds bowl that leads down to the new Grey Butte lift. You can't lap that though, so we only got to ski it twice. Luckiy it was a very warm day, upper 50s I think. So everything softened up nicely and we were treated to some spring like skiing. The new Grey Butte section is pretty nice, but the better skiing was on the lower stuff that day. I added an extra pic for Kusty.20230207_085849.jpg20230207_094054.jpg20230207_102617.jpg20230207_135817.jpg20230207_095259.jpg20230207_095516.jpg20230207_143806.jpg20230207_160046.jpg20230207_164930.jpg

Day 6 Willamette Pass OR. The powder is back! And it only cost the 3 of us a total of $14 to ski that day! Now being run my Mountain Capital Partners, hopefully this place is in good hands. Decent crowd for a Wednesday, I'm sure the snow helped bring some people out. Longest line of the day would still only be about a minute or two. Excellent tree skiing again and the back side was much steeper and bigger than I expected. Once they got it open I think we spent most of the day back there. It was the surprise hit of the trip.20230208_093253.jpg20230208_095716.jpg20230208_103234.jpg20230208_125308.jpg20230208_131912.jpg20230208_134618.jpg20230208_135140.jpg20230208_150725.jpg20230208_155251.jpg20230208_091008.jpg

Day 7 Mt. Bachelor OR. The first non-new place for me on the trip. It's still a huge mountain. Climb over a few rock or head slightly off the beaten path and you'll feel like you have the whole place to yourself. Good amount of leftover powder from the day before. Was much nicer on the north side and the higher up trees. Got pretty mushy in the lower trees as the day went along. The Cloudchaser chair was new to me. Last time I was there they had cut the trails but no lift yet. I did a few runs since the hike out wasn't too bad. The new lift does make for a much easier return from some of the further out bowl stuff.20230209_090910.jpg20230209_101535.jpg20230209_102329.jpg20230209_130347.jpg20230209_124231.jpg20230209_130350.jpg20230209_153410.jpg20230209_160216.jpgIMG_20230209_202540.jpg20230209_142343.jpg

Day 8.1 Mt. Hood Meadows OR. This was my third time there, but first time with a good base. First time was about 2 feet of powder on top of bare pointy rocks. Destroyed the base of my snowboard, but was worth it. This time much of the front was pretty solid. Luckily the north facing Heather Canyon was super nice, especially in the steep trees they have. It's a bit of a schlep, mainly if you want to ski off the top, but was well worth it. We spent much of the day back there.20230210_093012.jpg20230210_103132.jpg20230210_103125.jpg20230210_111651.jpg20230210_141034.jpg20230210_145647.jpg20230210_145651.jpg20230210_153445.jpg20230210_153456.jpg

Day 8.2 Cooper Spur OR. We ski Hood Meadows until a little after 4. I'm not really sure how long our Indy tickets were good for, but we wanted to hustle over to Cooper Spur so that we could get some runs in on their non-lit trail. They did not disappoint and kept them open until it was REALLY dark. The snow was real nice since it faces north and there was a good amount of untracked non-powder. The race team had 4 lines of gates set up on a poorly lit runs. Never seen so many crashes, but I bet they do real well in the day light.20230210_171239.jpg20230210_172343.jpg20230210_180507.jpg

Day 9, Mt. Hood Ski Bowl OR. Our last day was very spring like. Stuff started out a bit stiff depending on the aspect. Unfortunately the Outback section was closed, I'm guess to much thaw/freeze. That was our first closed terrain of the whole trip, so can't complain. We had a great time skiing the trails off the East Traverse. The further out you trekked the better the snow. Crowds were light on the West side where most of the good skiing is. LOTS of people had trouble riding the lower lift though, by far the most stops of any chair this year. But yet the longest line was maybe 2 minutes. East side had a race going on, we did head over at one point to check things out. Lift lines were still close to non-existent. Skiing was better on the other side though, so we didn't stay there too long. It's a very retro place for sure, all Riblet doubles, lots skis that I remember from 30 years ago, and a lot less helmets per capita.20230211_092738.jpg20230211_092858.jpg20230211_094842.jpg20230211_094908.jpg20230211_133355.jpg20230211_142045.jpg20230211_142045.jpg20230211_143429.jpg20230211_151958.jpg

Thanks for reading. I'm not much a of trip report person, but I always enjoy other people's and figured it would nice to share some photos of the out of the way places. Next trip is a bunch of smaller WY places along with Terry Peak SD and Red Lodge. No kids, but hopefully I'll still take some pics. For now, here is the latest lift ticket score...tix.jpg
