. I asked my bro in law to take a pr of my skis to be sharpened only since i wax them myself all the time . AND HE WAS TOLD THIS -- DOES ANYONE THINK THIS IS BOGUS and we are being OVERSOLD ??

This is a copy of the email i got from my BIL tonite : $15 for sharpening alone, $25 for tune-up. I was going to go with the sharpening alone, but was told that may not be a good idea. Sharpening alone will result in the base and edge not being level (I'm not sure how true this is). It might be ok to do it once, or maybe twice, but sharpening without the complete tune-up may effect the skis after several sharpenings --- each sharpening causes the edges and base more and more unlevel.

Opinions ?? Feedback ? What d'ya think?

I think they were talking about putting it on the belt grinder. You have to do that or the bases will be higher than the edges. I only get the base ground once per year. They may have explained it wrong but they r on the right track.

Yea they are correct.
When a ski is sharpened they grind away the metal to fresh metal. If only the edge is done, and the base of the ski not touched then they will not be even. I dont usually sharpen my base edge, as I dont want to grind the bottoms to much. I stone grind the base usually once a year.

I have no friggin' idea, but I do feel that skis can be "overtuned" or perhaps constant tuning is "overrated". Look at it any way you want, but based on my totally unscientific opinion, I do feel that unless you're a guy like WoodCore that really knows how to ski the edge of the ski and has been doing so for years, or are in a race program, agonizing about how well your skis are tuned each outing is probably overkill. For 90%+ of the skier population a good "shop tune" every 10-20 days is probably adequate. I'm also one of the guys that firmly believes that if you think you need a perfect tune every time out, you're skiing the wrong kind of snow. But I'm also a carving hack, so what do I know...?

Interesting points Greg . I ski about 25 days a yr so only get em done once a. yr . I use 2 differant prs so one is always ready to go . Since i'm almost entirely on hardpack and on piste 90% of the time EXCEPT for the rare POW days this seems to work for me . The guys i ski with all like to rip and let em run so we keep them reasonably tuned and well waxed .

Thanks

You do the wiggle wiggle skid turn. You don't really need an edge you don't ski them anyways.

Well, assuming you split between the skis, at a dozen days a year each pair, you're probably fine once a year, so hell, go for the $25 "full" tune. Others might disagree. sometimes a fresh tune just feels good, whether or not there is any real performance gain or not....kinda like the recent oil change in your car that makes it seem like it runs better (it really doesn't).......ya dig? ;)

I agree with you. A good edge is over rated for most of the skiers that are out there. If a person is just skiiding their turns(and most people are) then how does a sharp edge really help them?

 Classy as ever. iMuscle strikes again. What grade are you in?

And yeah, 2knees is an accomplished (nice spelling, iq67) bump skier. BTW, I think there might be a vid of you skiing that (impossible to all mere mortals) bump course at Whiteface floating around. Either SkiADK or AndyZone. Maybe I'll go dig that up to demonstrate your bump skiing prowess....

Warp was I crapping on your thread or does someone have baby rash?

You really are hilarious. I've taken a big step back from this forum the past few years and in all that time, you still really haven't evolved much.
