10 Reasons to ski Sugarbush next week School Vacation

1 The snow….40 plus inches in the last few days. Base depths increasing!
2 No lift lines
3 Great instructors . You’ve put your little ski children into lessons at your favorite local mountain and seen them grow but a couple more days of skiing and lessons will make them jump that next step.
4 Snow is soft. If you ever wanted to learn snow boarding now is the time. When you fall the snow is forgiving.
5 Your kids need to get out of the house. What better way to wear them out is a few days of skiing
6 With daylight savings in full length the drive up and or back is in daylight and beautiful
7 Castlerock is open…even the rocks are covered on Rumble.
8 The trees are skiing great!!!! Had face shot yesterday.
9 Warm sunny weather to enjoy the new Castlerock pub patio
10 DISCOUNT TICKETS Spring rates are in effect so it is cheaper to ski and stay in the valley.
More snow is on it’s way! Come up and ski !\

PS It usually rains one day out of school vacation week but the other 8 days are usually GREAT! Do not let a little rain in the forecast deter you! Often even then it snows on the MT.

If someone has never been to Killington or Sugarbush, which do you recommend and why?

And if anyone knows a realistic driving time from NYC to both places, it's appreciated!

5.0 hours to Killington and 6.0 hours to Sugarbush would be realistic expectations. You can possibly shave a half hour off those times if everything goes well.

What type of skier are you? What do you like? For natural trails, moguls, and trees, SB is better. Killington is bigger, probably more variety, possibly better for cruising. It has challenging trails as well, but IMO, it's not as good as SB in that regard. I've had less experience in Killington's woods than SB's, so I'm not really the expert in that regard, but from my experience and from what I've heard I would give SB the edge there too. For me the extra hour to SB is absolutely worth it. I'll go to Killington if others I'm with want to, or in the past for late season, but otherwise I strongly prefer SB.

I make it to SB from west 70th Street if I am not in NYC rush hour traffic in 5hours, but I push it. I go Hutch to 684 to 84 to 91 to 89 and Exit 4 to 12-A and over the Rockbury Gap with one stop in South Deerfield for Gas and Coffee.

Whatever the case SB is only 30-35 minutes farther than K from points South!

30-35 minutes from SB to K? that's good to know... bc all the maps say an hour.

Do you think you make better drive time by not taking 87, or does "push it" mean reckless speeding? ;) also, since you are a NYC'er, what about Gore? I don't think I've even seen it in these forums? is it that much below VT?

If you drive from K to SB it is an hour, but from NYC you stay on 89 longer and that is why it is only 30-35 minutes longer from NYC. Some prefer 87, but I also had a preference for the way I mentioned. I can't comment on another resort. I have to leave that to others!

Great to hear that you can do it in 5 hours .. that keeps me more optimistic that my idea of going up Sat night leaving 8ish, skiing Sun, and returning Sunday night and being able to make it into work the next morning is reasonable :) I can see you doing the Killington to SB route in 45 minutes, maybe, but Route 100 is pretty curvy for a 35 minute drive.. Milegage-wise I'd certainly agree that you'd think it'd be that short. But you've probably done the trip far more than me, so I'll concede to the expert.

Ah, I missed this post. So we are in agreement that it's an hour driving from K to SB. I use the route you said to get to 91 if I'm going to Jay, but I never thought about doing that for SB, since 91 is east of SB.. I've taken 87 and driven right by Killington. I think 5.5 is probably about right for that but I was being conservative with the 6.

Anyone know if there will be any green trails open next week, for sure?

I'm thinking of going up with a young one, who can only ski greens.

Given what we got yesterday and the forecasted Nor'easter we will have Pushover, Slowpoke and Easy Rider open off the Gate House. Sleeper is also a great trails for a youngster. This Nor'Easter looks like it will begin Sunday afternoon and last into Tuesday. It will bring high winds so there are going to be lift challenges at the higher elevations on Monday if the storm shapes up like Roger Hill is saying, but it could also bring in significant snow in the mountains and rain near the Coast and maybe even in the Valleys. I would definitely get on the road before mid Sunday. If you want a lesson, please call ahead.

If I were to ski Sunday there would be a concern with roads if I left SB around 4pm going back to NYC?
