Here's the link to the blog about opening weekend for Mount Snow that Kelly Pawlak, the GM of Mount Snow put up today

http://mountsnow.com/thankful-for-opening/

She's an incredibly straight shooter when it comes to telling one what to expect when they come to "her" mountain. And if one looks close enough while there, you're probably going to see Kelly out and about scanning passes in one of the base area lift queues, cleaning tables in the cafeteria, and sometimes even on bathroom cleanup duty. She's someone that I'm very happy to call a friend, and has one heck of a managerial style (probably one of the reasons why Peak Resorts as of late has been promoting multiple members of her staff to GM positions at some of their other resorts

Thank you I do like her blog a lot.

Hello from
Hunter Mountain!

I know the
burning question that is on everyone's mind- "When are you going to be
open?" Unfortunately I do not have a definitive answer. In the
early season cold weather comes in waves. Up to this point, daytime
tempuratures have not allowed us to make snow. We are holding out for
the next cold spell which looks like it will arrive the week following
Thanksgiving. If everything pans out we will look at opening for the
following weekend. Trust me, as soon as we know you will know.

Cannon has backed out to a 11/30 also.
Their FB page is blaming it on inversions but that isn't stopping other nearby areas of similar base elevation from opening. It sounds like they started blowing too late and got caught off guard by the weather. I was really surprised to see this announcement.

Not that Mount Snow is close but they got porked by the inversions this past week. Made plenty of snow down low but up top they are lacking. They aren't opening from the summit for Thanksgiving - just Canyon and Carinthia.

Can grooming machines push the snow up the hills?

In theory yes, but the practicality of pushing snow up to 3/4ths of a mile from some piles closest to the summit that are already limited in size because of the inversion make it likely feasibly and financially unrealistic- just gotta wait until the cold front swings through on Saturday and then (maybe even for my birthday on Monday :) ) they'll be open from the top and unleashing the snowmaking system on new terrain! :fanfun:

Same thing happened to Burke. The best snowmaking weather occured when this ultra stable High pressure first set up over New England. I think Burke was still getting their new "Large Marge" super pump tuned up and they weren't at full capacity. They made some snow before the inversion set up, but not enough to open this week.

They have pushed the opening date to Dec 1. However, Jay will be open.

Is it just me or is this season's start a bit on the slow side? I know a lot of areas don't usually open until December but in the less than 10 years I've been skiing I remember plenty of seasons where I had a choice of places to go over Thanksgiving weekend.

T-day is early this year. One whole week left in Nov.

I was thinking quite the opposite. Really great stretch of snow making weather (at least until this week's inversions). Sunday River's opening weekend was incredible. Jay could have opened two weekends ago if they had operations and facilities ready to go. Those that blew early could open when they wanted to. Jiminy seemed to open quite early. Pictures from Stowe's opening looked great. Killington did a very good job as well, skiing off three peaks including Snowdon and Skye.

Seems like a reasonable amount of terrain an options for Thanksgiving week. There would have been much more but many resorts started blowing way late when they had a HUGE opportunity to base build essentially all month. Compared to bad Novembers, this November is definitely above average. We are suffering from delayed openings not because it was a bad month but because many mountains made poor snow making decisions and waited to long to pull the trigger.

Maybe Im missing something, but if Mount Snow was able to run the guns on Canyon (shown on web cams for the last week) and shutoff Guns on upper mountain during inversion then why didnt they run on Snowdance? Same elevation as Canyon and next trail to it, seems like they wasted oppertunity on the lower Mountain. Just my 2 cents worth.

I think this is exactly right. People tend to remember the most recent things more than the things that happened earlier. While it's true that the inversions have wreaked havoc during the last week or so, the couple of weeks before that (roughly from Nov. 3 through Nov. 15) allowed several NE resorts to make tons of snow and expand at a quick pace. As Riv points out, it seems that many mountains are not open because they incorrectly decided to wait too long to start making snow. Those that started making snow early - Kton,. SR, Loaf, Okemo, Stowe, etc. are all open and have decent terrain options for Thanksgiving. At least in the case of Kton, I know that being able to ski trails off Kpeak, North Ridge, Snowdown, Ramshead and Skypeak is pretty good for Thanksgiving.

Of course, those further south had a tougher time. But as Jiminy shows, if you had the will you could probably be open by now. This is especially the case of Hunter and has been much discussed in the Hunter=Fail thread. As for the rest of the ski areas, most are not usually open by this date, especially considering - as was noted here - that Thanksgiving this year came early.

Jay also opened with two trails today (Jet & Haynes). They blew a MASSIVE amount of snow before the inversions and had no problems. I was really blown away by just how much they blew out those two trails two weeks before Thanksgiving.

Any resort blaming the inversion for not being able to open this weekend should turn that finger around and point it at themselves. It is a pretty rare year that blowing early is the better option than holding off on the blowing. But this is definitely the year that jumping on the snow making was the better managerial decision. It is pretty striking just how much the snow making leaders have open when many areas are saying the weather didn't allow them to blow enough snow to even open a single trail...
