On Sat I was at the MMT (a waitsfield VT restaurant now referred to as the Local Folk Smoke House) about 5 pm and was told that MRG had shut down for the season and had laid all of the staff off. The 5 skiers at the bar were in shock and as each thought about it there was pretty much silence for a few minutes while it sunk in. With that said, I think it is about time for the 5 or 6 feet we are owed.

I didn't, and I'm making believe I didn't just read it here.

"5 or 6 feet we are owed"? What, you want summer now?

A watched pot never boils and a watched winter never snows.

Doesn't sound very true.....from their site:

Hey, at least it is looking white out on the hill today! However due to a lack of snow we have been forced to temporarily close the mountain. As soon as Mother Nature allows we will absolutely re-open. Hopefully this crappy weather scenario will change REAL soon and we will be able to get going ! Temps have already returned to more seasonable norms and we have even seen a solid inch of snow overnight. There is some hope in the forecast with (Ill believe it when I see it!) a foot or more of snow predicted for early this week. Check out the latest meteorological prognostications from MRG weather guru, Josh Fox, at his MRG weather blog. He believes snowier times lay just ahead.

Based on the following quote from their website, I'd say it is not true. While things have been bad so far this year, I'd be very surprised if MRG gave up on the entire season in early January.

Shut down for the season?

Their website says they're closed until the weather changes. Looks like the person at MMT was mistaken.

I did hear Greg has been having a torrid affair with the now-single Britney Spears. I give that more weight than a story about MRG closing.

Thats a shame that these poor weather conditions have affected the sustainability of the resort so substantially, (Though glad to hear that its only until conditions improve)

However I still have one small lament...

if revenue from single plankers (Snowboarders) is allowed to flow into MRG would MRG be running into this issue...

I know we have another thread for that whole argument, Im not trying to stir the pot I just thought the events (closing, layoffs) warrants discussion...your thoughts

Scuttlebut on the Sugarloaf chat has it that Blue Mountain in Ontario closed for the week due to lack of snow and laid off 1300 employees.

I know alot of you think I'm just stirring the age old argument pot here, but, If this is true (MRG Shutting down and people being layed off) I think its an issue that warrants discussion...your thoughts

Ya gotta have snow no matter who you let slide around on it.

The skier/snowboarder argument has no bearing on that.

How would allowing snowboards at MRG stop layoffs when there is no snow?

It seems like semantics are getting in the way.
"Laid off" means different things for different people. What they mean is "laid off" until they are called back, much like in the construction business.
"For the season" is likely to mean - until viable once more.

I don't believe anybody is more passionate about snow and skiing than MRG shareholders. They put their money where their mouth is. They would be the LAST to throw in the towel.

Gotta love it...

For once, I'd like to not see the following progressions on a thread:
Warm weather in winter -> global warming
MRG -> snowboard ban issue
Accident -> helmet argument

Vicious Rumors

Greetings Alpine Zoners

Just heard about this post and want to quickly nip this one in the bud. Glad to know that Phildozer had the sense to check out the website.

No MRG has not packed it in for the season. Yes, we have laid off most of our staff and we are "hunkering down" until the weather changes for the better. No they have not been laid off for the season, hopefully just a short term thing. I also want to state publicly that our staff has been UNBELIEVABLE in this very tough situation. Many have come in unpaid, have offered to help any way they can and have even offered to give up pay to fellow employees that don't have the wherewithall of others. This whole episode has once again shown why Mad River Glen is such a unique and special place, not only as a ski area but as a community .

We absolutely will re-open at the very first chance we can. Believe me, no one wants to re-open more than the folks at the skier-owned mountain. We view this lack of snow as a "bump in the road" and we remain optomistic for a reasonably decent ski season. As any MRG skier knows, February and March are potentially our best months and we still have a chance to make up a great deal of the lost ground. So many of our passholders and Mad Card'ers made a commitment to us this year and they can rest asssured knowing that we will do whatever we can to re-open as soon as we can.

Before the next rumor starts I'd also like to state unequivocally that the historic restoration of the Single Chair slated for this Summer IS going ahead as scheduled. The engineering is complete, production of many components are done and everything is moving full speed ahead. Our capital campaign is moving along and has tremendous momentum. Learn more about this unique effort at www.madriverglen.com/single/

Everyone needs to keep their chins up and keep thinking snow!

Also, thanks for the single chair update. :snow:

Jim, my thinking was based on the economics of more 'skier/snowboarder visits = more revenue for snowmaking' at least enough to stay open during these sparse times as MRGs neighbors who do allow snowboarding have been able to (IE: Sugarbush, Bolton Valley, Stowe)

Im not trying to fight the 'uphill' batlle of Sowboarders at MRG...we already have a thread for that

I was questioning the Economic impact on the resort because of the ban

They don't want more snowmaking, that's part of what makes it what it is. Their lack of snowmaking equipment isn't because they can't afford it...
