I don't wear one, but not for any philosphical reason. I know it's better to wear it. i know they're comfortable. i know they're warm. I just don't feel like it. I'm sure I will when I'm splattered against a snow gun.

I don't wear a helmet. It's a matter of personal choice and I don't think anything is gained by knocking people who don't wear them. I don't need statistics because there's statistics to support both sides of the argument. I don't need anecdotes about people you know who were lucky to be wearing their helmets. I can tell you a lot of anecdotes about me and my friends who went out skiing, had a great time and came home safely - without wearing helmets. It's a decision everyone can make on their own (we're all grown-ups), and saying that people who don't wear helmets have no brains does nothing to further the discussion or convince people to wear helmets.

Also, the seatbelt analogy is a little off. The reason that there is a seatbelt law (in every state except New Hampshire) is that people could go flying out of cars after collisions and hurt other people. I don't think I'd have any problem repealing all seatbelt laws if there was no chance that anyone else would be affected. Must be the Libertarian in me.

Do you cancel your fire insurance because you haven't had a fire?

I'll agree the analogy is bad, but I don't think that's the reason for seatbelt laws. I think the real reason is that insurance companies were tired of paying the extra claims. I don't think you'll see any evidence of a reduction in premiums after seatbelt laws were enacted, but I bet there's a reduction in the claims paid.

Yes I do. Gotta set an example for the lil' one.

Nice gaper gap there :daffy: Seriously though I love seeing little kids out there ripping it up.

I agree with everything you said except for this. I don't think that people being ejected from vehicles and acting as human missiles was the reason for the seat belt law. I don't care if you or anyone else I don't know wears a helmet or not. I think it's maybe a bit foolish, but you have your reasons and I respect that. The statistics, anecdotes, etc. are my reason for wearing a helmet, not the reason I think everyone else should be forced to wear one.

I dont wear one on my harley and i dont wear one on the slopes. Its each individuals choice and nobody, especially the government, has any right to tell anybody to wear one.

The primary reason i dont wear a helmet is because i was blessed (cursed?) with a massive head. Size 8 hats dont fit and through seven years of middle school and high school football i was forced to put my head in a vice. Wouldnt it figure that in my later years my two favorite activities call for helmets.

Thanks, but the biggest gap there was between her front teeth, kid looked like Strahan before she lost 'em.

The guy working at Zimmerman's clearance center almost had me talked into one yesterday. Obviously he was trying to make a sale, buthe did make sense.

Though I did get Rossi composite (carbon/fiberglass) poles and Grandoe gloves with Primaloft, Goretex and removable liners - all for $50 even. Gloves cost more than that alone, probably last year's model.

Thinking more and more about the helmet, especially after reading these great posts...
