I was speaking with one of my best ski buds today about his trip with his kids to Sunday River on Tuesday. He tells me that during lunchtime in the South Ridge base area he witnessed a man in his early twenties approach someone eating at a table with his family and shout "Your sitting in my spot!"
The man eating with his family replied "Excuse me? What do you mean YOUR spot?"
The guy in his early twenties says " Yea, those are my bags and stuff underneath the table! Get up and move! Thats MY table"
The man eating said " I'm not getting up just 'cause your stuff is under here! That doesn't make it YOUR table for the day!"
And thats all it took. The young guy dove over the table and attacked the man seated with his family!
It was quickly broken up by staff and some patrons and the "owner" of the table had his ticket clipped and was ejected from the property!
Gotta love vacation week!

I saw a similar thing happen at Sunapee on MLK. That guy wasn't coming back for a while.

I've never heard of such a thing. How childish can people act? What ever happened to being polite and having common sense? The world is going to hell in a handbasket!

Man, don't get me going. My wife's cousins decided to remain in Germany after his tour of duty was over. While the grandparents continued to nag them to return, they insisted that there was a greater sense of civility and simple courtesies there. Having been to Germany 3x over 20 years, I have to agree that we are on a Bohemian downslide.

I had a similar thing happen to me. My wife and I were sitting at table, with our helmet and gloves on top of the table holding spots for my friends while they bought their lunches. I guy came over and started screaming at us. But it didn't end in a fight just a few heated moments when we exchanged pleantries with each other. The funniest part of the whole thing was there wasn't even enough seats for his family at the table to begin with. I love meatheads.

I have had people ask me why I was sitting at "their table" since their bags were under the table.

The punk was probably given everything he wanted when he was growing up, so he was "entitled" to that table.

The bags under the table are, IMO, a serious annoyance. But certainly, no one "owns" a table for a day unless it's occupied.

maybe ski areas need to better educate their patrons about table manners? no, serously! perhaps ski areas should post signs in the lodge saying that you forfeit the right to your seat when you get up, that you can not hold a table if you are not actively using it? it is skiing and riding 101, but it is amazing the amount of jack offs that don't get it! hearing this type of stuff really burns me up, but i have yet to witness it or be involved in such an issue. most people are very polite about asking people to get their bags so they can find another table, myself included. perhaps it is just a difference of what areas i am skiing at. i seriously believe the bigger resorts and corporate resorts attract more of the meat heads and losers causing this type of crap.

This post reminds me to put a granola bar in my pocket as i head out the door to the slopes because as much as I love skiing I hate ski lodges more.

I hear ya. I avoid the lodge at pretty much all costs on busy days - get ready in the car and don't eat in the lodge. Why would I want to eat in the lodge and pay $10 for a cup of crappy chowder?

A closer look probably revealed that this >>>imposter<<< probably had just gotten in a fight with someone as to if he could see Suicide Six from the top of Sunapee. Probably got in his car and opened another beer to relax himself before driving. lol. Anyways, we could wish...more reason why I am waiting until next week to ski. Sad part is that I probably could tell you what color this guy's plates were.

I'm with Robbski on this, the lodge scene at most resorts doesn't enhance the ski experience at all.

And to think so many folks rag on New Yorkers and Hunter for being uncivilized.

Guess it happens at alot of resorts, even those in Maine.

Rather than dump my bags under a table, I choose to scoot them off to a corner or toss them on top of a set of lockers. There isn't a lodge out there that can provide a table for every group out on the mountain that day. Its common sense. The group that I usually ski with actually keeps an eye out for people looking for a table and tries to scooch together to make room.

So few of us think of others these days....

belleayre last year had a guy go nuts lookin for his bag in the cubbys i remined him that it was my shit he was flinging around and could he please stop...answer was "i was lucky we were in the lodge because he would kick the shit out of me" i said go for it and he left...was looking in wrong part of lodge for his bag...my advice is if anybody says anything to anybody that resembles a threat in any way is to walk into office and get security

i try to eat lunch at 1030/11 in lodge ...last yr we ate slope side on fallen tree most the time

I've really started to dislike bags under a table - they tend to work themselves out into the aisle a little, and I've tripped over a couple (the buckles on my boots caught on them). It's hard enough navigating the crowds sometimes, and it's a real pain when you need to watch out for stray bags too.

I noticed that Stratton now has a Guest Services person actively telling people there are NO bags allowed to be stowed under tables - there are lockers right there, and a FREE bag check too, good for them!

idiots! what a stupid thing to start a fight over. never mind the table, these people who leave their bags in a public place all day are LUCKY they don;t get STOLEN. The ski lodges are incredibly tolerant of this behavior considering that it doesn;t help their business. they do have lockers and bag checks available. I usually brown bag my lunch and feel almost guilty about eating in the lodge sometimes.

i usually take my lunch breaks at the mid mountain or summit lodges only to prevent having to deal with this behavior.

once, I heard of someone who had their shoes stolen or disposed of at Windham. they left them in the cubby holes at the rental area. oh well.....that;s just a little too much trust in my book.

Not for that reason alone, but for the thefts... I never leave anything out. I minimize the amount I have to take into the lodge by getting ready in the car and just leave a few things in a locker.

Too many stories of stuff getting stolen, even shoes!! I can't drive my car with my ski boots on ;)

I find that the Valley House lodge at the Bush is usually a pretty good option and is relatively uncrowded.
