It can be...I mean it takes me 2 hours to hike up Nosedive and then I get a 5 minute run..maybe 10 minutes if I dilly dally...but it's worth the effort if the lifts aren't running. I'm a vert whore though and like to get lap after lap after lap which you can't do hiking..

2 hours up nosedive? Wow that is slow. Less then an hour to the gondi house.
2 things made skiiang available to the "masses"
the first was lifts.
the second was locked heel (alpine) bindings.
Once that happened, "everyone could ski".
Before that people had been skiing for around 5-8 thousand years.
It's not about the descent when you are out in the woods touring around. It's exploration. It's looking around at all the hills you've never stood on top of and deciding you want to know what's up there. And after each new trip you will feel a stronger connection to your surroundings.
There was a lemming thread earlier on this week, or last. The real answer to that original question is ANY trail off a lift is just a bunch of lemmings. Totally fabricated scenario. Even if you then "hike" for something, it's not really as pure an experience as looking up at the top of the Mtn. as you put your skins back on for another lap and knowing every inch of your trip was self powered.
PLUS: You will never appriciate a deep powder run as much as if you earned every inch of vert.
It's the journey, not the destination.
Thank goodness most of you just ride the lifts and ski "the riverbed".
Cheers.

I ski for the thrill of it. I dont get any thrill out of walking up a hill.
I hike for the exercise. I get to the top of a peak and it does nothing for me.

I hiked/backpacked long before I started skiing and love it. I don't get out anywhere near as much as I used to though. Anyway, I can totally see the appeal of earned turns, but when time is limited I want to get the most skiing out of my ski day which is why I prefer lift-serviced.

Earned turns for me is for when the lifts aren't running..early/late season or a dawn/dusk patrol mission. On April 19th..I hiked halfway up Mad River Glen in my ski boots..postholing in some spots..I was drenched by the time I hit mid station..then I had a snack, safety meeting, and a beer..and skied down in sweet untracked crud..woo hoo woo hoo hidey ho...It was on my drive up to Stowe right around 4:20PM...then some major grubbage at the Cabot cheese store..mmmm

It's what floats your boat.

A big reason I love it is to be away from all things man made, including other people, and to be completely on my own, totally responsible for my every action and decision (with the members of my party). I find self reliance to be very rewarding.
