Thanks

Cannon is hardly a "hill".Most ski areas in NH are mountains.A hill would probably be 500 vertical or less. The "craziest terrain" would have to go to Tuckermans but it's far from being a hill either.

I think you might be taking him a little too literally.

Tuckerman Ravine is on Mount Washington. Mount Washington is the only 6000 foot peak in New England. It's the only true big mountain terrain with sustained 45 degree steeps in the east. It's been an April/May institution since wood skis, cable bindings, and lace boots.

New Hampshire does not have Vermont-level steeps. New Hampshire gets half the natural snowfall of Vermont and most of the trails were cut before snowmaking so they couldn't be on super-steep terrain. For example, the terrain off the Zoomer chair at Cannon is comparable to Wildfire at Killington. A Vermont single black with enough pitch to make it interesting. The point of places like Wildcat and Cannon is that you can still find some classic New England twisty-wind-y narrow terrain cut to hold snow before snowmaking. It's far more interesting than some straight and wide gash down the face of a hill. It's not in-your-face challenging but it makes for an interesting day.

If I had to pick, I'd point you to Wildcat. Cannon is much easier access since it's right off I-93. Cannon is less busy than Loon or Waterville Valley down the road but Wildcat gets quite a bit less skier traffic on a Saturday. Wildcat also gets somewhat more snow than Cannon.

I think we've got too many tekkies onboard the forum today. ;) I hate reading my engineering society magazine. The letters to the editor nit-pick to death technical details to the point that the original point of the article has been entirely obfuscated.

To my relief, most tekkies don't/can't nitpick my grammar! :)

p.s, my undergrad paper was in engineering, so I can pick on myself :)

Here's the deal.

If you want a retro feel with twisty challenging trails and a rustic base lodge go to Cannon or Wildcat. Want super service and lotsa intermediate cruisers try Bretton Woods. Modern lifts and weekend crowds? Waterville and Loon.

Waterville doesn't have half the crowds of Loon, but is just as good. Try out True Grit and and Lower Bobby's Run, both are super steep double blacks. Tippy can be like a double diamond at times lol.

For mid-size you can't beat Tenney or Cranmore - the two most underrated mountains in NH (in my opinion.) Ragged is an okay option too, but I personally don't like it quite as much as the other two.
