Ok, so this being my second full season skiing, I decided to get some gear. Have purchased boots. Went to Potter bros to rent ski's for the season. Question about the ski's I rented. They are K2's with the name TWO on them. They looked alittle narrower that what I had been renting on the mountain, and I can't find too much about them online. Still consider myself a beginner, and wondered what others thought of the ski.

Let me add a couple of questions, if you don't mind. I am also considering a season rental. :)

Can you change the rental skis during the season? And any recommendations for season rental stores with a wide range of skis around NYC, including Catkills?

Do they look like this?

I hope not because those skis are probably only worth $50. How much did you pay to rent them?

Somewhat different color scheme but similar yes as they do have USA printed on them. Was $99 for skis and poles for the season. I wasn't worried so much about the money as I just want to be on modern equipment.

Is there any chance you could get out of it? Perhaps look around for better season rentals before you do. At $99 I wouldn't consider that a fair price to rent, and certainly not modern equipment. Really a shame they would rent those to people for $99 when they're not even worth that much...

Well I already have them. Guess I can give the shop a call and see what they say.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Only going into your second season, they'll be fine, but I still don't think that's a fair deal.

I skied on that model for two seasons and improved my sking a lot. For a beginner-low intemrediate skier I think they will be fine. I agree with Greg, though, you really should go into that shop, speak to a mgr and complain strongly. I bought those K2 Twos I had for $45 as used rentals. While "buyer beware" is a good motto to live by, it's also true that shops like Potter Bros should not be charging 2X a skis selling price to rent it for a year. See if you might get at least some store credit or something. Although, I'd have to say that if this happened to me, I for sure wouldn't be giving any more business to that operation.

But, again as far as the skiing goes, you'll be fine!

Well I can apply the rental fee to the purchase of ski's at the end of the season.

"Applying the rental fee to purchase of ski" sounds like they'll claim the ski is worth more than the rental fee and ask for some additional payment for you to keep the ski.

For what it's worth, like Euler, I bought a similar ski (K2 "Four") about 5 years ago on ebay as a used rental ski for $50 shipped. Look at comparable current sale prices on ebay (or unsold skis with high reserves). If you really want to keep the skis at the end of season, by my reckoning they should pay you a $50 refund!

Oh, no I wasn't going to buy those ski's. It was my understanding, I could apply it to the purchase of any new ski's.
