tent catterpillar damage
Those things are nasty. While out near SE Mass this spring (almost on the Cape) those things were everywhere. Everybody laughed when I pointed out all the droppings on the cars and my sis-in-law, says, "no, that's pollen...". Riiiiight... ;)

It reminded me of a time as a kid back in Trumbull CT where the tent catepillar (gypsy moths, right?) were so bad, the town sprayed the area with insecticide to kill them. Our house had a ton of large oak trees in the yard and after they sprayed, they all came down and it sounded like it was raining. I recall my mom sweeping off the sidewalk and patio. I think that traumatized me and I've hated those things ever since.

I personally would not refer to us as the southern Whites in Nashua. I'd call it more of a suburb of Boston. I also don't think we are really influenced by the ocean since we are pretty far inland. Nashua is pretty much just far enough from everything to actually be convenient or fun...but that's another story.

I noticed today a few Maples are starting to change and a few leaves are on the ground here on the coast of Maine. I am sure that in the mountains the change is even more obvious.

I hate hot, humid weather so September is a welcome change from that...most of the time.

If trees are turning color now, especially in southern NE it is due to illness or stress. It is not good to see trees turning color so early. It simply means unhealthy or dying trees.

Unfortunately for many years now our forests and us humans for that matter have been declining in health due to pollution and disease. Not exactly new information.

Pretty sure your influenced by the ocean..
I'll have to check my notes from avalanche class on Mt Washington...
But coastal climate/weather definately affects Mount Washington.

Yeah you're probably right about being influenced by the ocean. I guess I was just thinking more about where I grew up in RI and we were far more influence.

I stick by my assertion that we are not the southern most Whites. Just because it's part of NH, doesn't make it the Whites.

We have had quite a few dry summers in the last 10 years or so. Early foliage change/leaf drop is not necessarily a sign of a sick tree, the loss of foliage is an effort by the tree(s)to reduce water loss/evaporation through the leaves.

If you're refering to Bob R's comment keep in mind that he also has a place in Campton, which, I think, is what he was talking about in that case. His place is about 35 minutes south of Franconia Notch.

Yeah, that certainly makes a difference. I thought he was referring to Trashua.

re: stress vs color change...I've seen branches start to turn in late Aug before. This year is the latest I've seen that evidence. Just noticed a Maple in town (in Ma on the RI/CT border).

I love this time of year. Already stopped into a ski shop to price things for the family. Wachusett has a sale this weekend. Hope to get there in addition to all the end-o-season yard work on my list.

All those posts said September 1 (2005). I couldn't believe several were lamenting about the dry summer! I thought you were all nuts! Then I saw the year....
