i may an chance to go to the big island in march for work, i heard you can do this and saw this on the net. anybody know anything else about this?...

"When people think of snow skiing, Hawaii may not be the first destination that pops into their heads. But, if tropical snow skiing is your bag, then Hawaii is the right place.

People do snowboard and snow ski on Mauna Kea (Hawaiian for white mountain) on the Big Island of Hawaii. There are no ski lifts to take you up the mountain, which is over 13,500 feet high, so you must rent a 4WD vehicle or hire a guide. Skiers take turns being the driver up a road that also serves several observatories at the summit.

Snow falls during winter months, though the ski season can run from November through July, and the snow can accumulate to a few meters depth. February and March are the best bets for good snow. This has been called the finest snow in the world, and there is a ski-able area of almost 100 square miles.

At the summit, you have an incomparable, unforgettable 360 degree view - Mauna Kea's moonscape terrain, the lush tropical vegetation below, and the surrounding ocean. As an extra, in the distance you see Maui's Haleakala crater.

Snow skiing in Hawaii is unlike skiing anywhere else in the world, plus, how many places do you know where you can go snowboarding in the morning and scuba diving in the afternoon? So get with your shredheads and launch some gnarly tweakage".

Is that a copy and paste??? I was in Hawaii but on Oahu and in the summer..How is the snowpack on Mauna Kea right now??? It would be cool but I don't see returning to Hawaii again..just so much travel involved but if it's for work, it's a free trip so definitely go!!!

Go for it! You can tell people that you skied the highest mountain in the world (Mauna Kea is higher than Everest when measured from the sea floor). I've always wanted to do this but could never get to the Big Island. Too much of a beach bum then.

Can't wait to see the look on the locals faces when you get off the plane with a ski bag!

I was there last November and there was a snow storm up there. I drove up the day after the storm and there was still snow in the shaded areas. have some pics of me on it. Some of the runs looked fun and steep. It looked pretty rocky.

Check out the web cams here, and you can see there is some snow right now, but not too much. http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/current/cams/index.cgi When I called the info line while I was out there they said if there was enough snow to ski/sled.

If you do it, you'll be better off approaching it as an experience of skiing in a very atypical place, instead a pure skiing experience. Id look into renting skis from one of the ski guides so that you dont need to travel w/ your own skis, on what will realistically not be a primarily-skiing vacation.

It is on my list of things to do FWIW, though it will be hard to justify. My wife & I went to Hawaii in July and the weather was superb, I dont think Id ever want to go there any other time of year. And certainly not in March!!

To state the obvious, if you want a ski experience in an atypical place & time do NZ or SA.

Been there, done that, and even have the T-shirt.

The skiing kinda sucked but the bragging rights are for a lifetime!!!

Six years in the Navy also gave me the opportunity to ski Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Germany, and Italy. Some good, some not worth the money (drunken sailors have been known to spend money without much thought) but now forty years later I have the memories and the stories to tell.
