I think that's your attempt to rationalize this trend.

Nobody else is doing this at any level or other industry. Understanding how to source produce to bring down costs for the restaurant is important, but it doesn't teach you how to run a ski school program, manage snowmaking, seed bumps for an FIS event, or deal with ski patrol. At this point I think it's really weird.
A lot of that depends on the mountain. At a small mountain like Magic, I imagine that a GM probably does need to do all those things. At a big operation like Stowe, the GM’s job focuses more on finding the right people to do that and ensuring they are doing a good job. They might deal with high level decisions and strategy, but most likely not implementation. Being a good manager is finding the right people and trusting them to do their jobs. You can’t micromanage because that drives good people away and there just isn’t enough time to do so.

There is some truth to that as well. Its just strange that nearly all promotions to GMs are coming from F&B.

even at little Ski Roundtop, the guy was F&B at heavenly and wanted to move back east closer to family. He has said that he has a good team that he trust to ensure the mountain is run as good as possible.
