Ski cams are fun, but shouldn’t Sundown be more concerned about the “major makeover” just announced right up the road at Butternut? One hundred and ten (110) new tower guns, hundreds of new rental boots and boards, boot drying capability, and an expanded rental shop. This is a major investment aimed at the local market, which BN is betting will be staying close to home during the economic downturn. Sundown and BN are close enough in proximity to share the same market. Anyone care to speculate as to how this may affect Sundown’s market/future?

There are expansion plans in the works. These things take time.

BTW, I'm not sure how much of an impact that would have. Butternut is pretty flat and over an hour away from Sundown. It also does not have night skiing, which is a huge bonus for Sundown.

Web cam--- necessary.

Today was significant in two ways. Changed the gym routine to try and do something about my legs dying on Gunny last March and began seriously considering new boards. Aspen East still has the Twisters.... must be a sign from the mogul gods.

As an aside-- besides all you guys who MTB-- what excercises do the dedicated bumpers do to ramp up for the season?

absolutely nothing.

less then nothing if thats possible.

Legal, I'm not trying to be a tool. But those makeover items shouldn't strike fear into the people at Sundown. Upgrading their rental fleet is great but will the average person renting gear know/care enough to choose between Sundown and BN based on the age of the gear. As for snow making, Sundown blows plenty of snow on their existing terrain. I bet even with the snow making upgrades at BN, Sundown will still have a longer season and and great coverage.

Great news for Butternut. Will it significantly affect Sundown's bottom line? Probably not.

Sundown's rental fleet isn't that old (I don't think), and they already have massive boot drying trees in the rental shop. The rental shop could be a bit bigger I suppose, but if there's that many people renting gear you probably don't want to be on the hill anyway. ;) BTW - the article doesn't say that they're expanding the rental shop, just rearranging the current space to make more room for the customers.

As far as snowmaking goes I have no complaints at Sundown, they do as well, or better, as anyone else in covering and recovering their terrain. They're constantly tweaking the system and buying new equipment when necessary.

Those things all sound nice for Butternut, but I doubt they'll have much impact on Sundown. Especially considering the lack of night skiing, as Severine mentioned. Not to mention that Sundown is way cooler anyway, and has better bumps.

Posted before reading the thread carefully-- a no no--

Butternut's prices on kid's programs and season passes are much lower than Sundown's. I know a few families in our area who have migrated to Butternut. However, Butternut has no night skiing- meaning no grabbing a few turns after work. Butternut is also at least a half hour further away- limiting the ability to shoot up (with or without kids) for a an hour or two when schedules or conditions make it difficult to do a whole day or half day. Also, Sundown's commitment to bump skiing has me, and a few other dads I know, willing to pay the extra dollars.

While I did consider doing the family thing at Butternut and a pass for me at Sundown, I have been very pleased with the instructors my kids have had at sundown and still like having the bumps when the kids are in lessons. We will remain at Sundown this season.

We do have a web-cam in the plan for the upcoming season. As far as snowmaking goes we already have 140 low-E guns to cover 65 acres. Our rental shop was expanded to 3 times its original size a few years ago and the fleet is always current. most of our lodge is only a few years old and the older portion was renovated this summer.
The snowmaking upgrades at Butternut started last year and were long overdue. I ski there a couple of days a year and last year they were able to open trails sooner and recover faster than they had in the past.
Sundown, Mohawk, and Butternut are all well run small ski areas, in close proximity that offer very different options.

I recently had a dream that I was skiing at Sundown. And I have never even been to Sundown! I don't know how that happened. Me thinks I have been seeing Sundown threads too much. ;) Hope that adds to the stoke

Either that or a combination of a SSLLOOWW round on the golf course causing a case of heat stroke for 'ya that you probably didn't rehydrate quite well enough with a few beers before bedtime ;)

Or it's just August and the ski jones is really reaching it's maximum now :)

I really need to get out there this year. Will the gatherings still take place on Wednesday nights this season?

I too had a ski dream this week. Jones factor is climbing out of control.

It was fairly random last year. I'll at least be there every non-storm (i.e., non-VT day trip) weeknight until I'm comfortable with my 100 day season.

I only did a few night sessions last season. I found myself there more on Friday and Sunday morning/afternoons.

Yeah, the weekly gathering night didn't work out as well last year. It's hard to say what this coming season will be like. It's nice when there's one default night that we meet up on, but that's not always practical.
